80-year-old Picard doing a bunch of action scenes will look ridiculous and it will make the series look ridiculous. A series where the lead is this age should be about something else.

But in a future where humans live to be 130+, 80 years old should be more like later middle age, rather than elderly.

In TNG Picard was aready 70+ (Seriously, he graduated in the 2320ies per dialog in TNG - "The First Duty", and that was in 1992.) Add 25 years or so to that and Picard in universe is near 100 years old.

IDK - Unless it DOES turn into a Flashback show, or a show where Picard sets something up, and other new main characters deal with the situation; at 78, I don't think you'll see Patrick Stewart up for a lot of running around or major action sequences.

I always assumed that's the reason it's not a "TNG revival" show, but a "Picard" show - probably with a young, new cast that can do action stuff, that is now led by Picard.

Also, Patrick Stewart is buff! It doesn't seem this way, because we was donning some serious old-age make-up and acting in, say, Logan. But he could easily play your action-granddaddy, like Harrison Ford or Bruce Willis right now.

That wasn’t a legal requirement, CBS already debunked that.

It was creative choice. Probably so they could sell everything under a different licence/brand to make more money.

I’m assuming if they made the Enterprise 1:1 to TOS they wouldn’t be able to licence it separate under the Discovery brand.

The Picard Series is a shot in the dark at this point, until we have more concrete information. Specific series aside, another thing I was glad about was hearing the series would follow serialized Peak TV format.

And prior to three years ago, all talk about new Star Trek was theoretical. What if it happened? When will it happen? Now it's here and we're talking about something that actually exists and more of it that we know will be happening.

I remember trying to visualize how DSC would look. Rod Roddenberry, Nick Meyer, Bryan Fuller, and Alex Kurtzman. You had representatives of what I'll call Roddenberry Trek, Bennett Trek, Berman Trek, and Abrams Trek. All four major previous periods. I can see elements from each of them in the DNA of Discovery.

I really, really doubt that's going to happen. Simply by virtue of the people actually making it.

Trust me, I also would prefer a more cerebral Picard show. But that's not what we are going to get. We are going to get a Picard show, made by the same people that made Discovery and the Kelvin movies. Sure, they will try to make it different. The same way J-J- Abrams tried to make "Into Darkness" different from ST09. But its going to be an action romp regardless. These people simply don't see Trek as anything else, especially not as drama. It's an action property for them. They are going to insert more speeches (because that's what Picard is known for), and give it a bit of a different visual overcoat. But it's going to follow the action-formula, like every other property - hell, even every other Trek property - these peple have ever worked on.

Absolutely no action? No. I don't think they'll do that either. But, after seeing "Calypso", which I can't recommend highly enough, let's just say I can see quiet, thoughtful, slower-paced Star Trek in the future.

I haven't seen 'Calypso' yet, but the Short Treks in general seem to be more ideas- and cting-focused than action focused.

And you know what? I would LOVE that! A thoughful drama, with some action sprinkled inbetween (but not as athe focalpoint of each episode), is exactly what I would like the most from Trek!

I just try to reign in my expectations, to not get disappointed when the show airs and it's the action-schlock I expected.

It was a glorious time. A brand new Trek show set in the Prime Universe exploring a moment in Trek canon that has never been touched upon. Made by Bryan Fuller and maybe starring Rosario Dawson. First gay character as a serious regular. Would feature a character who is more of a lower decks type and would not focus on characters who are all in the same traditional jobs. It was all sunshine and ice cream until the famous Klingon pic of the Klingon extra posting a pic of him eating lunch or something while still in makeup. That was when our sunshine turned into smog. Our Ice Cream turned into poo and it was never the same again with fandom. The thing that was going to unite us, destroyed us and for once Trek fans became cynical about Trek.
