Spoilers The Strange New Worlds Starship Thread™

I feel like I'm the only person in the world bothered by how the pennant on the engineering section is sliding down the hull in the opening titles.

Also interestingly, that's the Season 1 model, note the neck isn't rounded.

There's also a weird outline around the windows.

The design first appeared in Season 2.

The texture in the scene you posted appears to be messed up

Looks a lot better in Season 2

Now that looks very FASA. Or maybe Jackhill... err, Orion Press maybe.

I'm very glad to see round nacelles return. The look in ST: Enterprise was just about right for the most part anyway, updated with just enough details. The Intrepid also showed a transition towards intercoolers, and 'flux chillers' (magnatomic etc) as well, albeit in a less elegant and bulky overall configuration. The Kelvin and Mayflower nacelle style also mostly worked in that regard too.

I guess I just never really gelled with the 'look' for Discovery era ships. The Big-E's nacelles do still feel a bit bulky and cumbersome still though, but there's now a clearer transition back towards a more elegant, retro look. Just feels rather belated, however.

I guess we could now see the DISCO era nacelles as something of a shorter lived experiment? Akin to the linear Warp era (as some older sources termed it) of the 2270s onward. That said, the Discovery did look in many ways a lot better before they stretched the nacelles out to double or more the initial concept length layout... which didn't really sell me on the aesthetics as well. Plus led to sizing up all the ships too, more than likely. Aesthetics I find always work better when there's a practical and simplicity angle to it, too.

Ships can still end up looking just too advanced I guess - which feels like kind of forced rebranding. Particularly the Shran and the Hoover and a few others. Still - they're definitely nailing a lot of the old school aesthetic this season.

Also, the
Larson
too...:techman::beer::cool:

My personal headcanon is that the boxed in nacelles of Discovery were necessary due to early Starfleet not having the defensive shield/screens technology powerful enough to withstand direct energy weapons fire.
Especially from Klingon disruptors.

They are essentially 'round' nacelles with armor plating encasing them.

They definitely have round elements and probably show a transition from more NX armor plating tech to defensive screens and shields over larger sections of the ship.

But, yeah, I just thought the nacelles were overbuilt but still rounded core not just square.

Thanks for compiling and sharing all these. They look cool. While it looks like they won't appear in the season proper, I hope STO is compelled to realise these starships, as they're compelled to make all canon Starfleet designs sooner or later.
Some of them might show up in season 5

And they’re not really compelled to make anything. They make what think will sell.

We’re still missing some of the DSC S1 Klingon ships, and some ENT and TNG era ships.

I'd certainly like the round nacelle option on the various DSC ships.

A rather interesting deck plan of the saucer section.

I can make out the foward lounge and Pikes Quarters. I'm thinking the large room aft of the lounge is the new science lab. I'm also thinking there's a couple of transporter rooms on opposite sides of the central core.

You are correct in your room identifications. However, this is not a singular deck plan but rather a composite of multiple decks showing locations of key rooms throughout. For instance, that’s the bridge (not an auxiliary bridge) in the very center of the saucer, surrounded by sick bay and the overflow infirmary. I will be posting my recreation of this graphic on my social media accounts on Monday.

Don't let Alec Peters hear you say that.

Though it's possible someone else agreed, and that's why the windows are blacked out in the final shot.
Oh I've told people my opinion on the details of the Ares lmao

The RCS thrusters are glowing on all of those ships for some reason.

As mentioned before, the credits re not done by the same vendor that handles the VFX seen in the actual episode, and they do not go through approval from the VFX Supervisor, which would explain why some of these things happen.

The artist who modeled the ships from the season 3 opening titles, W.M. Cheng, has posted some clear renders on another forum. It looks like an upside-down version of the salvaged fake ship from the season two premiere is a real design, so we can all pretend that this real ship is the one that was at the starbase, and not the very similar looking fake ship built from salvaged parts.

My condolences to The Wormhole with regards to the retro-Nebula. :p
Good ships all around.
