Now that looks
very FASA. Or maybe Jackhill... err, Orion Press maybe.
I'm very glad to see round nacelles return. The look in ST: Enterprise was just about right for the most part anyway, updated with just enough details. The
Intrepid also showed a transition towards intercoolers, and 'flux chillers' (magnatomic etc) as well, albeit in a less elegant and bulky overall configuration. The
Kelvin and
Mayflower nacelle style also mostly worked in that regard too.
I guess I just never really gelled with the 'look' for Discovery era ships. The Big-E's nacelles do still feel a bit bulky and cumbersome still though, but there's now a clearer transition back towards a more elegant, retro look. Just feels rather belated, however.
I guess we could now see the DISCO era nacelles as something of a shorter lived experiment? Akin to the linear Warp era (as some older sources termed it) of the 2270s onward. That said, the
Discovery did look in many ways a lot better before they stretched the nacelles out to double or more the initial concept length layout... which didn't really sell me on the aesthetics as well. Plus led to sizing up all the ships too, more than likely. Aesthetics I find always work better when there's a practical and simplicity angle to it, too.
Ships can still end up looking just too advanced I guess - which feels like kind of forced rebranding. Particularly the
Shran and the
Hoover and a few others. Still - they're definitely nailing a lot of the old school aesthetic this season.
Also, the
too...
