AOTC was my least favorite Star Wars film until the Sequels came out, but even it looks gorgeous and is a visual and sonic joyride. The seismic charges dropped by Jango Fett are one of the most memorable movie sound effects of this century.

I said set pieces not sets; I didn't comment on the sets per se.

Come to think of it, episode 1 didn't have as much green screens
And was shot on actual film stock. It was one of the last Star Wars films to have a grainy, "dirty" look to it.
Anakin protested that, so they made the switch.
Most notably the Mos Espa Podrace Arena. 
Cool as it was as a game idea, the old TIE Fighter videogame may have been a bad idea, because it started the idea of playing Imperials and killing Rebels as something cool and fun — and now we’ve had decades of “the Imperials had a point” and “Stormtroopers aren’t ideological terror troops, they’re perfectly okay guys”, etc.
I mean, we had that since Ewoks too. The Empire always operates with the rule of cool looking stuff .
No, TIE Fighter was a fantastic game. It's not responsible for some fans sympathizing with the Empire.
First off, let's just nip the idea in the bud that video games started the idea of playing Imperials. Darth Vader and Stormtrooper costumes have been a thing since the 1970s, before any of the video games. People have always been playing Imperials.
Furthermore, people who cosplay or play video games don't automatically start entertaining the idea that that maybe the Empire is right, anymore than someone who dresses up as a witch on Halloween tends to end up practicing witchcraft. On the contrary, it's an absurd premise that one bleeds into the other.
People who sympathize with the Empire for real would be drawn to that viewpoint regardless of how many emotionally stable people play games or dress up. People who are drawn to support evil real life political movements don't do it because of anything to do with Star Wars. Some people either don't know right from wrong, or maybe they're just evil. Star Wars has broad appeal, so of course not every fan is working on all thrusters.

Think maybe I’m missing a reference? If you’re referring to something from one of the Ewoks movies or the cartoon, I’ve never seen the latter, and only the first few minutes of one of the former (I couldn’t get past the Winnie the Pooh narration, for some reason).
More the Ewoks were so disliked in some circles that the Empire was considered right to kill them.
Not controversial in my book. I've always been underwhelmed by Jimmy Smits, the exception being The West Wing and even there I didn't love his performance the first time I watched those seasons (yes, I've watched them multiple times and will again).
I would've much preferred Bratt in the role from the get go.

Even the OT itself injected some nuance into the Imperial military officers we see, main in TESB. Admiral Piett and General Veers, Captain Needa and even Admiral Ozzel don't really come off as evil people, but rather as decent people doing a job and that job unfortunately places them on the bad guys side. I mean, Captain Needa even takes full responsibility for losing the Falcon and personally meets with Vader to do so, even knowing this will result in his death.
Just because the Empire does have decent people in its ranks doesn't change the fact that as an institution it is evil. You can still celebrate the Empire's defeat even knowing that defeat has screwed over or even killed some people who are not quite as evil as its leadership is.

Any Imperial Officer over 40 in the original trilogy, likely fought on one side or the other during the Clone Wars, even if they did not happen to be a clone nor a droid.
Most likely the Republic side, as in Yularen's case or Needa's.
That seems less "decent" and more "dumb".
