I'm not saying it is not easy. I'm not saying it wouldn't be difficult, but while I support an idea of Star Trek reboot I also think the basic idea lends itself to a very simple storytelling. Hell, even Breath of the Wild game idea could be considered a Star Trek story of cooperation of 5 different races creating a coalition.The familiar provides a hook.
Yes, the familiar is nice, but we got something like Project Hail Mary too and such. It's fun to create possibilities.

I have a vague notion that a new franchise could resemble Trek in two general ways:
1. People having adventures in space.
2. An optimistic attitude. We can build a better future.
But to avoid law suits you would need to refrain from what is iconic to other franchises. Examples:
No Transporters. No light sabers.

Heinlein wrote various stories all in different settings, different polities around the solar system or galaxy and people going on adventures.
Adventures in space and optimism can easily be constructed with different ideas than Star Trek.

I think the problem is finding investors for something that is like Star Trek, but has none of the public reverence or merchandising built-in.
This stuff costs hundreds of millions of dollars now. It isn't for the faint of heart.

We don't need any more 23rd Century Settings. The 23rd century is done to death at this point. Just my opinion. We don't need more reboots trying to re-live the past. If you go that far you might as well just do a new show, new lore, instead of re-doing things over and over again.

Not clear who owns the whole thing. There have been efforts to create either a re-imagined version or a sequel of sorts (J.M.S. of B5 tried) but all failed due to collisions over ownership.
We don't need anything else from the 22nd, 23rd, 24th. Question is are there still enough people to make any one of them profitable in the future. Whichever one they think that they can wring the most revenue out of, will be where the next one is set.
Star Trek in the last years has suffered the same fate as a lot of other shows, the producers just want to milk more and more money out of it as much as possible. They couldn't care less about the quality of their work or how it is seen by the fans.
Star Trek is a business. They didn't start making more and more shows as some kind of charity. It will always be about milking more and more money out of it, until there is no one left that cares.
An unfortunate nature of the beast. No one is doing this for free.
Unfortunately this is just the nature of most businesses.
The cost of doing a business is balancing your desires and the need to keep the lights on. People say, "they're making it for money" as though we don't need that money to keep producing things.
I’m sorry but this is a load of bunk. That they have a vision of Trek that differs from what some fans expect or prefer DOES NOT mean they “couldn’t care less about the quality of their work” or some such nonsense. I’ve been a fan of Trek since the early 70s and while I haven’t liked all Trek equally, I would never presume that the makers of series or movies I find less appealing than other bits I like very much is because they “couldn’t care less”. It’s rather cynical and condescending as a view, frankly.
It is my honest take on this matter. If you have a different one, that is fine.
Seeing them trod the same ground over and over again instead of branching out shows that they don't care all that much about going beyond, as seen by the constant "recapturing" the glory days in recent shows. It comes off as cheap in my opinion.
