The Very Specific Reboot Star Trek Needs

Thing is, you do that too much and it’s not really Star Trek anymore — you do need both the “naval” element and the “visiting strange worlds” element (even if you’re largely stuck on a space station). (You can certainly do that in the Star Trek universe, it’s just that the feel would be that of a different subgenre.)

That said, it would have been fine to indicate that, sure, the Solar System is teeming with orbital colonies and such, even if our stories mostly leave all those behind the same way we leave Earth behind.

Nobody gets paid to produce something they don't care about.

Exactly.

Every time someone says "They don't care" or "The writers are lazy" or some other nonsense, I tend to scroll on by after that.

They can do stuff you don't like. They may take chances that don't pay off, or write characters that don't resonate. They can have plots that aren't interesting to you...All of that is fair.

No one who is employed on a multi-million dollar network show is "lazy" or "doesn't care." It's ridiculous.

Who holds the rights to Forbidden Planet? You could make a series set in that universe, we know very little about the rest of the galaxy.

I think the pre-1986 MGM movies are owned by Warner Bros so that should be part of the Paramount merger. Amazon didn't buy the entire back catalog.

I googled it after I asked, looks like WB started working on a remake in 2024, so that's presumably still active.

Eh. Space Trek, then. Instead of hundreds of star systems with improbably humanoid aliens and weird yet relatable cultures, it’s hundreds of O’Neill cylinder colonies, asteroid settlements and colonized-centuries-ago Kuiper Belt dwarf planets with human-descended populations and by-now-weird yet relatable cultures. Should work fine.

There is the concept of using engineered space habitats as nature preserves. Come to think fit, there was a short story in which dinosaurs were housed in an O'Neill style cylinder. Sort of like Jurassic Park in outer space.

There is the concept of microplanets. Mini-Earths.

There was this Star Trek concept I heard of, I can't find any documentation of it - but it is set on a apocalyptic Earth where the planet froze over, a few centuries later, the Enterprise is launched as a submarine to contact other surviving cultures that remained underground, the Enterprise would be an "American" vessel.

Sounds like Magna 1, but that wasn't Star Trek, just another unproduced Roddenberry concept.
