There's a difference between "being subtle about it" and "having the references sail above your head". It's okay that you haven't been aware of the contemporary issues Trek has tried to address, but don't mistake that for Trek not addressing contemporary issues.

I will go out of my way to spot such contemporary issues on my TOS rewatch.

Please, please tell me your comments were in jest. Because Star Trek has always, and I mean always been the way of the writers of the show to express their views about events and choices in the world we live in. Literally from day one. This isn't about head canon, and what someone interprets from the stories, this is literally how the writers and producers have talked about crafting the stories they tell.

Some have been exceptionally on the nose (like F**ing sledgehammers to the skull), some have been more subtile, but its literally always been there.

Now you can absolutely say that Trek isn't trying to say the show mirrors the Democratic Party. But it absolutely has (using American style definitions of terms) been a liberal and progressive leaning show, trying to reflect the issues of the day dressed up in shinny science fiction universe so that people who lean conservative don't realize what lessons the show is trying to teach them. Even when under management telling them not push hard, the messages are still absolutely there.

I’m starting a TOS rewatch tonight and will be on the look out for such vested agenda and general allegory. Any American political context would be alien to me though. I am going to do some reviews of each episode I watch too, see if they stand the test of time and all that.

Well, the novels have always indicated the Constitution fleet had their own uniforms, even when the Disco blues were still being worn by everyone else in Starfleet. As this picture is presumably supposed to be when April commanded the Enterprise and Pike was XO, there is no error. If anything, it's surprisingly consistent for Star Trek.

Mind you, the obligatory error does come in that, this picture was presumably taken somewhere between 2245 (the fanon date for the Enterprise's launch) and 2250 (when Pike canonically takes command of the Enterprise according to Disco). We clearly see Pike wearing a gold uniform here, despite Alora's surprise at seeing Pike wearing a gold uniform would indicate he was wearing a different color when they previously met in 2249.

That was probably taken after he was promoted to be April's first officer aboard the 1701.

I got the feeling she was being a bit coy in that scene and she was talking about his 'Birthday Suit' uniform.
He did have a chit-ass grin on his face when she mentioned it.

I don't they're using the pilots ranking system. Pike is probably a Commander.

Love how the Outpost uniforms have the TOS insignia. They're really dialing into TOS more and more as the series progresses. I love it!

Pike prevents Maat Al-Salah from joining Starfleet and alters his destiny where he's still in command and his crew still in place during the events of "Balance of Terror." Now Pike must make a difficult choice to go back and convince the kid to join, thus sealing both their fates.

Although Spock wears science blue in 2254 and 2259, command gold in 2265 and then switches back to science blue in 2266 so as TOS proved one can wear a department color one year and be a totally different one the next. Kyle goes from red to gold and back to red as well.

I like to think as a department head and the ship's XO, Spock got a choice of which department color to wear. He favored the blue.

When Kirk took command in 2265 Spock switched to command division upon Kirk's request or something. Then when things settled down a little Spock switched back to science.
