Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

And wrote The Dark Tower, 5th Wave and Angels & Demons and iRobot and etc. etc etc.

He's had a lot more rough than diamonds

(I like Nutrek. I think it has issues, and a lot of those issues stem from Kurtzman and Goldsman, but overall I'm a fan and am super excited for Strange New Worlds)
So that’s why Dark Tower was bad. I was curious about it being a sequel to books but they barely did anything to address this.

Finally we might get to learn more about UESPA. It's something I know people have been wanting to learn more about for decades. Also the show should have a 5 year mission. That's it's arc. End the show after season 5. Pike turns the ship over to Kirk and accepts that he knows soon he will have his accident. Maybe UESPA is why they have the TOS uniforms and everyone else has the blue Discovery ones. Also I want to see the bowling alley and I want Pike to actually watch his tv when off duty.

SNW? How are we suppose to make fun of that acronym? /s

"SNW" isn't an acronym.

As for this announcement, color be unimpressed and uninterested. The look, feel and tone of this "new Trek" doesn't fit with what I want to see. I expect more space battles and more people who're supposed to be a better more structured society acting just like us today. Yeah. Just what I want in Trek.

Picard turned me off half-way through it because it did something that just complete shat in the face of everything I want to see and expect in Trek.

I don't expect this series to be any different.

But, hey, dark sets, brooding people behaving in repugnant ways, so, STAR TREK!

Good news! :)

I hope it will be good and REALLY explores strange new worlds. I think it would be best if the series is a mix out of plots just lasting 1-2 episodes, the time of a mission, and an overarching season arc. So more like SG1 and SGA and most CW shows and not like DIS or PIC. I don't think they can really have completely different kinds of missions and in many different places if everything has to be subordinated under one all overbearing big season plot.

I also hope they get Spock's hair and sideburns right this time. Ideally Peck would just use his own hair and it would get cut in the right way. That likely would look better than any wig they can create.

In regards to this rumour I wouldn't mind the addition of Kirk though I can't imagine the actor in the article as a good Kirk choice right now. He just doesn't look right somehow. If the old rumours are true about Anson Mount not being totally eager to leave his home in New York it could be that he just wants to do the series for one or two years and they need another Captain after him and they want to introduce Kirk before that happens.

We also understand, having spoken to another contact, that the Section 31 series has been put on hold to allow for the development of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and to allow for Michelle Yeoh to have an ongoing role in Star Trek: Discovery for the foreseeable future.

I wonder if there is any truth to this? I don't know how trustworthy the site is.

If Mount only wants to do a couple of years that is fine. Switch him out with Bruce Greenwood in season 3 or so. Someone can say "You look kind of different today" and he can say "Thanks. Just got a haircut" and that's that.

Yes. Kirk would brood, Spock would brood, Worf was on permanent brood.

Repugnant ways? So, the Federation adviser who created the Nazi planet wasn't repugnant? All the corrupt admirals?

Star Trek has had humans act how they are as contemporaries, even with the optimism that we can become better. But, that doesn't mean they will always be better. Time and episode again proves that is not the case.

I get it-this Trek isn't for everyone. But, I'm pretty sure that all the themes touched in recent Trek were done, to various degrees, in past Treks. As someone else acknowledged, it's different because of the serialized storytelling but that doesn't mean the stories and themes of darkness, brooding and repugnant behaviors were not there.

Serialized story telling has nothing to do with it, the look, feel and behavior of these new series just does not fit with what I enjoy about Star Trek, I don't see how this series is going to do anything different than just be there for more KEWL SPACE 'SPLOSIONS! Because we're going to many scenes of dozens of ships rapidly firing laser bolts at one another!

I've seen a some of the stuff from Discovery, some of Short Treks and got turned off half-way through Picard after a major event happened that just shit in the face of everything this franchise should stand for and be about.

Nothing about this franchise as it now stands is familiar.

Serialize the stories all you want, that is perfectly fine. But the tone and themes just don't fit with what I want to see.

Kurtzman isn't the best writer, but he basically only directly writes the pilot episodes and/or the finales of modern Trek series. I expect he will help set up the initial premise and then basically leave the remainder of the series to others.

That's fair if it isn't what you want to see.

I'm just saying those themes have been there from the beginning. They have just been surrounded by episodes that touched on other themes. Serialized storytelling doesn't always allow for that branching out.

And, I honestly don't give two craps about "KEWL" explosions. That's not why I watch Trek. So, that's not a selling point at all and not what I have watched DISCO or Picard for.

And people still aren’t happy
Which is why giving in to fan demands is usually a mistake.

I hope you were talking generally with this part. I was the one supporting Strange New Worlds as a title.

And I'm looking forward to smacking down the inevitable "SJWs in SNW!" comment from whoever says it. Someone will.
I just meant re: the abbreviation and yeah just speaking generally, that wasn't directed at anyone. No slight intended.
