Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

I’m a former Certified Nursing Aide, so I’ll throw my two cents in for what it’s worth. I worked at an assisted living home, so it’s different than a hospital, I’ll admit, but we had a doctor come in once a week, aside from emergencies. Aside from that, all was overseen by the nurses on duty.

I work in healthcare as well. The administrative side but I’ve seen a lot of things.

Nurses, particularly nurse practitioners, are the unsung heroes of the healthcare field. There is a physician shortage right now. More often than not. I see the NP as opposed to the MD. You’re absolutely right in suggesting that when it comes to surgery, the surgeon is the one doing most of the work. In many other areas, the nurse or NP does the lions share. And the doc is only brought in when he or she is absolutely needed.

Nah you should sit this one out.

A nurse is never going to do the job of a doctor. Nurses hardly even go in operation rooms when a surgery is been performed

Somtimes Nurses are not even there when. Doctors deliver patient results and when they are there they keep quiet and let the doctor do all the talking

Trust me I know this as a cancer survivor who dealt with this stuff for about a year

The only reasons chapel is doing more than. Dr mengba is because that is how they think a strong female chatacter should be and I am saying this is wrong and a bad way to write characters

I will rather have another fan agree to this obvious truth than Try to bend reality to justify poor writing in a tv show.

Makes no sense and I find it quite bizzare

Next thing I may hear is number 1 can captain the ship better than the captain itself on a daily basis

TNG Riker will disagree to that.
go to any sizable bookstore. Look for the section with books and manuals for nursing students and the like. Lot of them are heavy shit.

As someone who recently spent a few months in the hospital, I can attest to this.

Lastly Nurses do not do medicine or know more medical concept than doctors. their job is to assist the doctors after the doctors do work like a surgery.

Riker and Troi
No. Often juvenile and Riker could be petty.
Jadzax and Worf
No.
Spock and Zarabeth
This one makes no sense. Spock almost killed McCoy over her.
Data and Jenna D'Sora
Terrible.
No it should not be that way. Doctors are meant to do more medicine than a nurse. To be fair I think it is just a way the show ends up writing poor and bad female characters.

They think if they make a female character who knows better than everybody and can do jobs that is clearly beyond their job specification and description, that this is how you empower women. I think it is wrong. Also it is not realistic.

for a show that likes to rip off buffy the vampire slayer, could they not have used Buffy herself as an example. What Chapel is in SNW will be the equivalent of Buffy having more knowledge than Angel and Spike (vampires who have lived for centuries, while Buffy is only 17 years) and also knowing more than her watcher, who is meant to teach and guide her.

Streaming trek since discovery have had a history of overpowering their female characters in terms of abilities. I mean Batel is literally a god in the final season, Michael and her mum were the Red Angel in Discovery, even SNW Uhura in season 1 said she could speak some languages that in TOS showed not to be the case.

This is not how you write good female characters. I am sorry but it is not.
I mean, you're welcome to your opinion but the medical side is just wrong. Nurses and nurse practitioners are far more relied upon in the day to day. Some can run their own practices, and provide prescriptions.

What languages were Uhura shown before Nomad being capable of speaking?

When I have a doctor's appointment, I spend far more time with the nurse than I do with the doctor.

Same as when one is in the hospital. When I was their recently the Doctor comes in for like 3 to 5 minutes and then he is gone and doesn't return until the next day. The nurses though are their for a entire shift. Then are replaced with other nurses who do the same.

There ARE such things as surgical nurses (they assist the doctor in the OR).

I'll raise you two broken ankles (I once spent thirteen months in a wheelchair because of them).

This is the worst argument since a five-year-old said he could be an astronaut and a dragon at the same time.

That's possible, If we could just access the computer or computers operating the simulation we are living and then making some alterations to the fabric of our existence.

I believe in episode 1, uhura says she can speak 32 languages including romilian. however in the undiscovered country film this was proven to be false , uhura did not know the Romulan language. maybe I am wrong and need to watch it again.

I do remember watching season 1 and been turned off by all the cool action sequences chapel was doing as a nurse and a civilian. In season 2 chapel did more action scenes than every other girl who on paper would have been better fit to do the scenes.

Again as I said earlier, it is a misconception of how people think to make women look strong but it does not give any realism or likability, a lot of characters on the show show little vulnerability. The Irony is that the vulcan shows it the most.

I'm a big fan of TUC for a lot of reasons, but mildly chuckle-worthy as that scene may be it was itself an incredibly stupid and laughably unrealistic concept of what Uhura should be capable of. The Federation doesn't need a dedicated officer just to man a radio. They need someone capable of actually interpreting a wide range of alien languages. Using that as the basis for what 'realistic' comms officers should look like is like using Kirk as the basis for what a 'realistic' martial artist should look like.

The modern franchise fixing obviously unrealistic flaws like this should hardly be considered a point against it, especially on grounds of defending 'realism'.

I feel it is more trying to over correct to the point of ridiculous than fixing and bad rectoning.

1. So I know in the original pilot of TOS, Pike did not want women on the bridge and even female watchers felt it was not that realistic so you correct it now by having mostly women on the bridge? this is not realistic especially in a sometimes military setting

2. Chapel was a joke in TOS, her crush on spock was silly and laughable and it was even more painful that spock did not care for her like that, so they fix this by making Spock a whipped needy guy where chapel has complete dominance over him and calls the shot to the point that he yearns for her after she breaks up with him twice? Did you see the Spock (I don't care attitude) when Tpring dumps his ass for Stonn in Amok time.

Nimoy Spock was meant to be so unattainable to the point that not even fans gave kelvin trek spock a pass for dating Uhura in an alternate reality because Spock correctly is not meant to have a stable girl friend. what is he doing in SNW?

3. Also Pike knew how to Captain with clarity, like In the cage episode, I also say this from Kelvin Trek Pike, in SNW Pike always needs to ask help or permission from Una to do anything and he never has much clarity and never feels like a Captain.

4. Also then there is the power set giving to characters that make no sense but I will not dig up this again.

If you want to correct, you find a balance. do not go the the opposite end the 1960s did
