Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

I believe in episode 1, uhura says she can speak 32 languages including romilian.
This was not stated at all. And assuming by "romilian" you meant Romulan, Uhura has never claimed to speak that language, not in TOS, SNW or the Kelvin movies.
I do remember watching season 1 and been turned off by all the cool action sequences chapel was doing as a nurse and a civilian.
Chapel had no action scenes in the first season at all, unless you count running after a fleeing alien through the corridors "action." But that scene was clearly played for laughs.

That, along with a lot of other things, was confusing to me too. The Serene Squall was really the only other "action" sequence I remember her having, and there she was using a hypospray to disable people. Which seems pretty reasonable to me! Unless they were missing the fact that The Broken Circle was in season 2 instead. Even if that was the case, both M'Benga and Chapel had a lot of Protocol 12 in their systems, which apparently gives anyone super strength regardless of their normal abilities.

Regarding the whole debate on nurses, it's important to remember that within the U.S. (and a few other countries, like the UK) the role of nurses has expanded due to a shortage of doctors, with nurses diagnosing some health problems and prescribing medications. This isn't the norm elsewhere in the world, where nursing has remained closer focused on patient care, while physicians remained focused on diagnosing and treating medical conditions.

Quite honestly, we have no idea how the split between physicians and nurses works in the Trekverse, but we shouldn't expect it to hew to either how nursing worked in the mid-20th century or how it works today. I would actually hazard a guess that more of a doctor's work could be replaced by AI diagnosis, meaning doctors would over time take on more nursing responsibilities, blurring the lines between the two.

Chapel is absolutely shown in SNW as being a medical researcher, which isn't something we consider related to nursing. However, she was originally a civilian working on the Stanford Morehouse Epigenetic Project. It doesn't take a large jump to presume she was essentially "drafted" during the Klingon War, and shunted into nursing due to a shortage, despite her original background being a medical researcher.

3. Also Pike knew how to Captain with clarity, like In the cage episode, I also say this from Kelvin Trek Pike, in SNW Pike always needs to ask help or permission from Una to do anything and he never has much clarity and never feels like a Captain.
I figure we must be watching different shows because that’s not how things are portrayed on screen at all.

Pike and Una’s professional relationship is set up much like Picard and Riker. The Captain depends on their First Officer for input, but ultimately it comes down to the Captain for the final call. That’s how the chain of command works.

Provide specific examples otherwise.

Nursing is a specialized field. One does not simply go from being a researcher to being a nurse at the drop of a hat.

Well, maybe she went to school for nursing, then switched to medical research, then switched back?

I suppose there could be some patient care at the Stanford Morehouse Epigenetic Project, but it doesn't sound like it due to the name.

I feel it is more trying to over correct to the point of ridiculous than fixing and bad rectoning.

1. So I know in the original pilot of TOS, Pike did not want women on the bridge and even female watchers felt it was not that realistic so you correct it now by having mostly women on the bridge? this is not realistic especially in a sometimes military

Who knows how things will be in the 23rd century?

Maybe she originally trained as a nurse and then got an additional degree. When the war came they needed nurses more than researchers.

We know Chapel's not an M.D. and a full Doctor until sometime between 2270 and 2273, since McCoy notes she's now an M.D. at the time of TMP and that he's going to need a top nurse, not another doctor who'll argue every diagnosis with him.
