Considering Kirk took command in either 2265 or 2266, depending on what timeline you adhere to, they'd need to do some time skipping if they want to end the series near the start of TOS.

Discovery was advertised as being 10 years before Kirk and Spock and started in 2256 sooo.

Edit:

Ortegas gets a lot to do in the first 5 episodes according to the TrekCulture video.

They also highly recommend rewatching Season 2 as there's things in the first 5, other than obviously the premier, that you'll need a refresher on.

there's at least a year between episodes 1vand 2 this season, so time jumps shouldn't be a problem.

I also think that having some of Kirks crew there already is very realistic. As long as they don't add anyone else. Its much less realistic to change over everyone except Spock at the same time. Arguably they should have held off on Scotty a little longer, but its not a big deal.

Looking at SNW to date:

• Season 1: Spock Amok, The Elysian Kingdom
• Season 2: Charades, Those Old Scientists, Subspace Rhapsody
• Season 3: Wedding Bell Blues, A Space Adventure Hour (may be more in the back end).

That comes out to 7 out of the first 25, or 28% of episodes

It's supposedly a romantic comedy episode, and it's rumored to include Trelane as well.

One interesting thing about the relatively meh reviews is they don't seem to agree on what the bad episodes are.

One review highlighted Episode 4 (the Hollywood holodeck romp) as the highlight of the first half. Another said it was the biggest miss. Similarly, one review said Episode 3 (the Klingon Zombie episode) was pretty meh, while another loved it. Opinions on Episode 5 seem starkly different as well.

The generalized consensus seems to be that the Season 5 opener is perfectly cromulant, but I don't see anything really beyond that.

Though I am seeing a general consensus that this season focuses more on the serialized character arcs (ala DS9) and not the plots of the week. Also that there's not really any deep cutting exploration of political themes, which leads some reviewers to worry that the show's been defanged a bit.

..."Spirit Folk". Why the hell did they do this twice in one season?!

I was mentally amalgamating the two into one generally disagreeable experience. At least with "Spirit Folk", you can start it up at 11:49:34 on New Year's Eve, allowing for a stroke of midnight cow smooch.

But then, "Fair Haven" has "Delete the wife."

I'm not a fan of Fair Haven, but I do give it credit for actually examining female desire.

Though imagining the whole thing gender-swapped is even creepier than Riker's whole thing with Minuet.

Minuet was actually a person (probably Zero Zero), since the holodeck couldn't do that level of real. Once the Bynars were gone, Minuet became basically a sophisticated blow-up doll.

I liked both of those episodes. People are to hard on them.

They're goofy and essentially harmless, and let you see another side of Janeway. Maybe not the best, but they don't leave me angry, outraged, or depressed. So while I don't think they're great, there are plenty of "better" episodes I'll choose them over.
