Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

Yeah, but why wouldn't I be interested in a story about ships chasing the Enterprise around the inside of a brown dwarf? It's like Wrath of Khan crossed with Starship Down and a bit of Disaster. Something about it is pushing me out of the story and I can't quite put my finger on what it is.

Because it doesn't appeal to you.

But it's appealing to everyone else! This doesn't seem fair at all.
Who said it's fair? Life is not even close to fair at all. I think Gandalf said that once.

And SNW has not completely won me over thus far, so you're not alone in that. It has its ups but the use of some characters, and some of the prop and set design still don't fully jive with me. Often times, such reactions are just a part of our humanity. Trying to sort out the "Why" of things doesn't always yield answers.

I could care less if everyone else loves something and I don't or vice versa. I'm not into Trek to feel part of an accepted group and fall in line.
Same. Ever since I got mocked for liking TOS and not liking TNG by my Trek fan friends I have come to the conclusion that my enjoyment of Trek has zero to do with other people's enjoyment of Trek.

I have no problem with any of the relationships. People fall in love. Doesn’t matter the time or the place. Is it a little unbelievable that this many couples would occur in a workplace? Sure. But look at The Office. Jim/Pam. Dwight/Angela. Angela/Andy. Michael/Holly. Michael/Jan. Kelly/Ryan. Kelly/Darryl. Erin/Andy. Erin/Pete. I’m sure I’m leaving some out. And no one complains about that show’s romances.

When it comes to TREK, the concern may steam from Starfleet being a quasi-military organization with a chain of command. Something that was somewhat decently addressed in the TNG episode, "Liasons" when Picard started dating LCDR Darren.

And Kirk lamented a couple times that his position prevented him from pursuing Rand ("The Naked Time," "Miri").

In a military structure, dating a subordinate, one you might have to order to their deaths, is a huge conflict of interest. But then again TOS was the most "space navy" drama of the entire franchise with everything after being more of a "workplace procedural" drama.

Of course Burnham and Book's relationship is more professionally acceptable than Stamets/Culber's because they are not technically colleagues, but that's me.

In Stamets and Culber's case, they're not directly subordinate to each other and are in different departments. They're also of equal rank. So guess that works better.

I have to be honest, Star Trek Strange New World is first Star Trek series that really feels good, it feels Trekkie, it has quality, it has story, it has good writing. It was good with Star Trek Picard season 2 ep.1 and ep. 2 but after that stopped.

Every minute of every episode of SNW is interesting. And today something happened that I didn't feel in let's say in ST Discovery. This happened:

La'an to Pike: We lost one crew person (bcs of sealed bulckheads to some parts of the ship ordered by Pike)
Spock to Pike: You made the logical choice.
Pike to Spock: Why doesn't it feel like that?
Spock to Pike: For the same reason you made it. Because you value life.

Deepness and quality of writing, quality of dialog like this I didn't feel it since old Trek (before tragedy in 2005). I was really emotional about it. In whole four season of Discovery that I really don't like there was no this real quality.

So this felt so so good.

Well I'm sorry. It is Star Trek and it should feel like Star Trek always felt. If you want some other Sci-Fi adventure, try to find some other shows. Star Trek is Star Trek.

That's not how Trek works for me.

Don't apologize for something you have no control over and don't actually mean. TNG didn't feel like TOS, DS9 didn't feel like TNG, and Discovery didn't feel like ENT. What's a Star Trek feel?

At the risk of being judged as shallow, my god the new Chapel is the most attractive woman in a Starfleet uniform since Jadzia.

I actually find her jumpsuit a bit baggy and shapeless. Like...it's possible she has a smoking body, but I have no way of determining that based upon what I see onscreen.

Though, TBH Jadzia didn't do much for me either. Too tall/willowy. I had a major crush on Ezri as soon as she came on the show though. Was always more into the "pixie" type women when I was younger.
