I had a Japanese oral surgeon whose middle name was Wendel.Well, since Colt can be an alien name, in the 23rd century I'm sure Kyle can be an Asian name.

Add to that, some fans are uncomfortable with having their biases, prejudices, and notions of "how things ought to be" challenged. They just couch it in more technobabble than most people.I think there’s a lot of head canon. And a lot of suppositions. The rules are made by those who make the show. We just get to enjoy it. (Or not.)
It doesn't even qualify for such a noble term as "technobabble."Add to that, some fans are uncomfortable with having their biases, prejudices, and notions of "how things ought to be" challenged. They just couch it in more technobabble than most people.
Unless they explicitly say it's the same Kyle, I'll assume it's not.As an Asian I have very mixed feelings about Kyle being Asian and the implication this is the TOS Kyle. @Nerys Myk said in another post that this is just a new Asian character also named Kyle, but unless it's his first name Kyle isn't an Asian surname that I'm aware of and there's no point in naming him as such honestly unless to basically say he's the TOS Kyle. I want better Asian representation in my shows but not at the expense of contradicting the previous established canon of another character.
I've seen a galactic conqueror whose name was Ming.I had a Japanese oral surgeon whose middle name was Wendel.
A character that a small segment of fandom remembers seeing in one episode of a Saturday morning cartoon from 1973. That's the last time I saw it, and I couldn't care less how they choose to depict April now.Yeah, it does seem a bit odd to me to cast a POC to play a character who we've already seen as a white.

My mistake. But the same goes for Kyle's race. That comment was about Kyle not April
Don't worry. TAS already didn't look great.I already recolored some tas robert april pictures to match the new actor, but my image editing skills aren't that good
In seventh grade, when I was drawing my own Trek comic, I used the TAS designsDon't worry. TAS already didn't look great.
I think their art department got a cheap deal on pink ink. Gawd, I couldn't stand the Pinklingons.Don't worry. TAS already didn't look great.
We have two Tylers, as well. There's already two Colts (obviously she can't be both human and alien, so there must be two), so it's not that big a deal to have two Kyles as well.![]()
That was over in a flash I believe.I've seen a galactic conqueror whose name was Ming.![]()
What do give a ship with two colts and two kyles? There's already two Colts (obviously she can't be both human and alien, so there must be two), so it's not that big a deal to have two Kyles as well.![]()
But then that raises the question of how he changes races between Strange New Worlds and The Original Series. For me it's not a matter of race, it's a matter of suspension of disbelief, and this is one of those things that makes that hard for me. At least when the new actor is the same race or gender or whatever it's easy to kind of squint and pretend it's the same person, but when there's a bigger difference that's hard to ignore, that becomes a challenge.A character that a small segment of fandom remembers seeing in one episode of a Saturday morning cartoon from 1973. EDIT: Sorry about that, I missed the subject moving to Kyle. But the sentiment is the same. His race is irrelevant.
Yeah, that's probably the best way to handle this. There's already two Colts (obviously she can't be both human and alien, so there must be two), so it's not that big a deal to have two Kyles as well.![]()
Add two Carstairs, and they'll have three pairs. It won't beat a flush, but it's not a bad hand. What do give a ship with two colts and two kyles?
