Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

I think there’s a lot of head canon. And a lot of suppositions. The rules are made by those who make the show. We just get to enjoy it. (Or not.)
Add to that, some fans are uncomfortable with having their biases, prejudices, and notions of "how things ought to be" challenged. They just couch it in more technobabble than most people.

As an Asian I have very mixed feelings about Kyle being Asian and the implication this is the TOS Kyle. @Nerys Myk said in another post that this is just a new Asian character also named Kyle, but unless it's his first name Kyle isn't an Asian surname that I'm aware of and there's no point in naming him as such honestly unless to basically say he's the TOS Kyle. I want better Asian representation in my shows but not at the expense of contradicting the previous established canon of another character.
Unless they explicitly say it's the same Kyle, I'll assume it's not.
It's the future not every one will have a name that matches their ethnic background. My cousin's last name is "Lim". His father is Hispanic and Asian. His mother, my aunt, is white. His kids have the last name Lim. And I assume his grandkids will as well. The Lim name may very well carry on into the 23rd Century with more and more diversity.

Yeah, it does seem a bit odd to me to cast a POC to play a character who we've already seen as a white. I have no problem with changing characters race in a reboot or alternate universe, but when it just seems weird to me when they do that when it's supposed to be the exact same person we saw before.
As for the name, I'm pretty sure there are probably quite a few Asian people who married a white person and took their last name, or who were adopted by a white family and have their name. I'm pretty sure there are probably a few other scenarios I can't come with right now. So it's not that hard to believe we could have an Asian character with the last name Kyle in the 23rd Century.

A character that a small segment of fandom remembers seeing in one episode of a Saturday morning cartoon from 1973. That's the last time I saw it, and I couldn't care less how they choose to depict April now.

EDIT: Sorry about that, I missed the subject moving to Kyle. But the sentiment is the same. His race is irrelevant.

I already recolored some tas robert april pictures to match the new actor, but my image editing skills aren't that good

That comment was about Kyle not April

But then that raises the question of how he changes races between Strange New Worlds and The Original Series. For me it's not a matter of race, it's a matter of suspension of disbelief, and this is one of those things that makes that hard for me. At least when the new actor is the same race or gender or whatever it's easy to kind of squint and pretend it's the same person, but when there's a bigger difference that's hard to ignore, that becomes a challenge.
There's already two Colts (obviously she can't be both human and alien, so there must be two), so it's not that big a deal to have two Kyles as well.
Yeah, that's probably the best way to handle this.

The best way to handle Colt is to realize that the Yeoman in the Cage is never identified by as Colt in dialogue or the credits. Colt comes from the script, which isn't canon on its own.
