Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

There's an easy explanation to this timeline issue. In the 23rd century, the term "twenty" is actually spelled "T-hoo'aaahn'Teeeh", and is an obscure alien term to describe "a huge fuck-ton of". So, "T-hoo'aaahn'Teeeh years" is Federation slang for "a huge fuck-ton of years". Hence why it's used derogatorily by Mr. Adventure to Uhura -- explains why she got so mad! -- and by Morrow to describe the crappy Enterprise!

Whoa there, sparky! There are a lot of fans and one Scotsman who would argue the "crappy" terminology!

Strange New Worlds is contradicting previous StarTrek, even if rationalizations can be conjured to explain said contradictions.

And? It's called retconning and it's not a serious crime. If they come up with a good story or character arc that possibly contradicts a line of dialogue or inference from fifty years ago, they're going to do it.

Christine Chapel's MA page currently reads:

Memory Alpha said:
While training to be a scientist, Chapel was a student in Dr. Roger Korby's class. They fell in love and became engaged. During this time, she became well acquainted with Dr. Brown, Dr. Korby's assistant, whom she affectionately called "Brownie". (TOS: "What Are Little Girls Made Of?")

Following her fiancé's disappearance on the planet Exo III around 2261, she abandoned a career in bio-research for a position in Starfleet in the hopes that a deep space assignment would one day reunite her with Korby. (TOS: "What Are Little Girls Made Of?")

Upon joining Starfleet, her serial number was NI-596 MT21Z

In a few years, it will probably read something like:

Chapel served in the medical department, a subsection of the sciences division, aboard the USS Enterprise during the 2250s, under Captain Christopher Pike. She left the Enterprise for a career in bio-research, but following her fiancé's disappearance on the planet Exo III around 2261, she abandoned her career to return to the Enterprise, now under Captain James T. Kirk, in the hopes that a deep space assignment would one day reunite her with Korby.

Yeah but, even IF it does (I honestly don't care enough about Dialoge from 40-50 year old episodes/movies to know or find out)
Even IF it does... who cares? As long as they deliver a good show I don't care whether they contradict some minutae from the older shows.

It should also be pointed out that TWOK famously contradicted Space Seed by asserting Khan remembered Chekov, when he hadn't even joined the Enterprise (yeah, yeah, he was a lower-decker...).

Ultimately this is the threshold. How much weight do past lines carry in terms of the show. For me (and you it seems) not a whole lot if the story is well told, is engaging with the characters and follows through on the themes. For me, most minutia dialog falls under "James R. Kirk" territory. Fun in a trivia contest, but not a standard by which I judge, well, anything.

How did ENT contradict previous Star Trek, and how has DSC contradicted previous Star Trek?
It takes place in the SAME centuiry as TOS (according to some on screen sources...) - to wit:

Kirk on screen dialogue from: TOS S1 - "Tomorrow Is Yesterday":

Situation: The 1701 has traveled back through time to the year 1967; Kirk while sneaking around an air force base is captured...

FELLINI: All right, Kirk. Maybe this will make you laugh. Sabotage, espionage, unauthorized entry, burglary. How are those for starters? And I can think up lots more if you don't start talking.

KIRK: All right, Colonel. The truth is, I'm a little green man from Alpha Centauri. A beautiful place. You ought to see it.

FELLINI: I am going to lock you up for two hundred years.

KIRK: That ought to be just about right.
^^^
Per ON SCREEN canon dialog 1967 + 200 = 2167

This is AGAIN backed up by on screen dialogue from TOS S1 - "Space Seed":
KHAN: How long?

KIRK: How long have you been sleeping? Two centuries we estimate. Landing party to Enterprise. Come in.

What? You thought TOS took place in the 23rd century? What contradictory info have you been relying on to make such a statement. I have multiple canon examples here that clearly place TOS in the 22nd century and Star Trek NEVER EVER has contradicted itself before Alex Kurtzman and Co. screwed EVERYTHING up continuity wise...

Oh...wait...:angel::guffaw:

Strange New Worlds is a brand new show using a long time IP. Nobody working on it has any connection to “The Cage” or the original Star Trek.

It can be a brilliant TV series, but it simply doesn’t come from the same minds that produced TOS. Those folks are either gone or infirmed or no longer interested in the IP.

I also disagree with the idea of Number 1 and Chapel being played by the same actor. Maybe a joke at some point for the hardcore fans. Also at some point they will likely joke about M'Benga punching Spock to cure him somehow as well.

Starfleet was Space Central or UESPA or Space Command until "Arena" and "Tomorrow Is Yesterday" or close to those episodes in Season 1. The Federation became a thing in the Gorn episode and by late in Season 1 Starfleet Command was established as the official operating authority of the Enterprise.
Yep. SNW may be retconning a lot of stuff but TOS retconned itself during its own run. Pretty sure the beginning of TOS emphasized that the Enterprise was an Earth ship many times before the concept of the Federation became established.

And it's not like all of that was chucked into the wastebasket of history and never again used. UESPA was later brought back as the agency that launched the Friendship One warp probe in 2067 and as the primary operating authority of the United Earth Starfleet in ENT which means it still exists up until Season 1 of TOS.

I know the twenty slang thing is a joke, but it made me think how at some point, the word minute gained a secondary meaning of a long time.

WOW. You all have been busy!
I'm really curious how/why someone with the last name Noonian-Singh is serving on the ship. I guess it's just a distant descendent of Khan? In that case I'm not sure why it would be a big deal, TBH.
I'm hoping we get some interesting character development there. How would you feel in that situation? I agree with those who said that, like Genghis, our Khan may have tons of descendants.

If he realizes that his destiny is set in stone he may be more relaxed and know that no matter what he does he can't escape what's in store for him in terms of being an invalid. He might fully embrace being warm and human knowing every day until the accident is precious and if that makes him seem fatalistic then in his mind so be it, so long as his actions don't endanger his crew and those he loves.
I can dig that. In my personal experience, dealing with friends' deaths has made me more warm and human. :)

Well, even though I've grown up with TNG era shows and only watched TOS in my twenties, seeing all this new stuff makes me really excited. I really liked Pike, Spock and Una on DSC, not to mention the reimagining of the Enterprise itself, so I'm very much looking forward to seeing them in action again.

I didn't have a problem with the repurposed dyed-in-primary-colors Discovery uniforms they had on DSC, so I don't actually think updating them was necessary, but it's perfectly understandable that a new production would want to stand out. They look good in any case, I love the department-logo stitching on the shoulders, and the lack of a black collar evokes The Cage a bit. Uhura and Chapel were definitely people I've counted on seeing again, the inclusion of M'Benga isn't that surprising either, but having an Aenar (played by a legally blind actor to boot) and an apparent descendant or relative of Khan in the cast caught me off guard. Even though I'm in a definite minority with this, I've always loved when an installment of a franchise was chock-full of internal references and callbacks, small universe be damned. You can start throwing rotten vegetables at me now.

The bottom line is, I'm not usually a huge fan of episodic series, but this looks very, very good for me. I can't wait.
And this lovely person is what it's all about! Bless your enthusiasm, @SJGardner!

Like every Star Trek series ever produced, it's fans will find more to like about it as the years pass. Don't know how new you are to fandom but as someone involved with Trek since 1969 - the Kurtzman era is following the same 'fan acceptance pattern' of every other Star trek incarnation since TOS.
Yes, this.

Yeah, it looks like the ship herself has been modified to look more like the TOS version of the vessel.
YAY! Call me biased, but to me, NCC-1701 is the most beautiful spaceship EVAH!

He's both, just like Texans are also Americans.
Texans are Americans? ::running&ducking::

That just reduces the Chapel character to a joke (which will get tiresome very quickly, too). It's far better to make both of them fully realized independent characters so that they can be fully fleshed out without any arbitrary and stupid limitations (like never being allowed to be in the same room, or always having to explain why they look alike).
Yes. If it was Lower Decks, that would be fun. Here, I hope we get an actual *character* instead of someone defined by who she's in love with.

What really made me excited about this yesterday is how excited the cast are! I've seen a fair number of promo appearances, and these folks all seem truly delighted to be doing this *and* doing it with each other. That sort of thing usually comes through in the work.

Kirk can't add.

And ended up serving on the same ship that would go on to find her long lost ancestor. I have a tough time typing that without chuckling. :guffaw:

Although Kirk in "Space Seed(TOS)" also called the process that created Khan and his fellow supermen "controlled genetics" which can also refer to genetic engineering.
