Starfleet career?

God no. Space would be cool to visit, but I'm barely a main character in my own life. No way would I survivie an away mission!

Nope. Get a bunch of mates together, nick a small ship with a cloak and a moderately fast warp drive and tool around doing fun stuff. Too much danger of being ordered to do planetary surveys or scan nebulae in Starfleet.

That just sounds like you want to hope into your AstroMobile and go planet hopping and dork around.

You don't need StarFleet for that.

No. I do not have any wish to join Starfleet. Neither as a fan nor as a hypothetical 24th century teenager.
First of all I wouldn't want to live on a Star Ship. I'd want to live on a planet and occasionally travel on a star ship.

And second...well I will be completely honest here and say that I don't want a job where I regularly get thrown into mortal danger such as hostile alien ships, the Borg, weird alien entities that like to kill people for science, unfriendly aliens with phasers and all that crap. No thank you.

Nope. I'm not good at taking orders, especially if I don't think they make any sense. I'd be happy to run the bar aboard a starship tho. ;)

Well, no - that's my point. But if you want to do anything worthwhile - I said do fun stuff, not dork about - (maybe like Mariner, you wanna do good and have adventures but hate Starfleet bureaucracy and the boring mission stuff) you might need a relatively fast, armed ship, preferably cloak-capable. A Runabout ain't gonna cut it.

Nick an old BoP or Raptor, or better yet an old Rommie light warbird and make it into a fixer-upper.

I can see it now, on this new hit HoloVision Show spread about the IGIN (Inter-Galactic Inter-Network): "This Old StarShip" and how you'll fix-er up to modern standards.

IDK, in my own life I'm rather like Bilbo Baggins: the main character, but not nearly as directly influential or heroic as a traditional protagonist.

Back to the OP: It depends on a lot of variables. Being born into a society like the 23rd/24th century is depicted in Star Trek would certainly change my present day attitude. Still, it would be probably more appealing joining Starfleet Academy than say, the present day military, the latter of which I had considered joining in my late teens/early twenties, so I'm sure I would have attempted at least to join Starfleet Academy if it were an option. Whether or not I succeed is completely different. Then again, if Reg Barclay and Tilly can graduate, then so can I! :)

Obviously we are all fans. But if you were a teen in the 22-24th century, would you want to go to SFA?

Nope. I would aspire to be what I want to be in this world but can't, a slacker extraordinaire that doesn't work and only does whatever I want to do.
Either that or an archaeologist

I keep myself in shape with boxing and jogging - and have done a few Tough Mudders - but my dyscalculia makes most maths and science incomprehensible. So I'd fail at the first hurdle.
