United Federation of Planets, the first 250 years

Yeah, let's try something original for a change. Was Starfleet a military or not?

Oh, before I forget, I mean during those first 250 years of course, (I wouldn't want to be off topic, after all ).

Yes, then it went through an identity crisis.

Can a foreign government be friendly/amicable with a Klingon house but not the Empire? Interesting thought

DS9 "In the Cards" is pretty explicit that it's more than a personal philosophy of Picard's.
Some of the Klingon houses seemed to be very independent of the Imperial government.

There seem to be two periods of Federation history overall:

2161-23rd century: Federation United Nations with Earth being the United States and its allies in space

24th century & beyond: Federation Superpower: member worlds of an alliance that theoretically have equal standing with each other, the United Nations/EU in space. Note that they seem to have two different flags for these periods:

Starfleet miltary I think sifts remeber Picard is living in a Federation in which a Big War seemed impossiable sure there are skirmishes but nothing between Khitomer and Dominion War that reall threaten the Federation

Kirk ? he graudated into Big War a 100 million dead his whole early carrer would be shape by the conflict
