Spoilers Starfleet Academy General Discussion Thread

Its not a non issue to me. Facts are the other 23rd and 24th century shows at least put in an effort to show us original costumes showing civilian clothing of the future. That meant no or nearly no 20th century buttons or zippers. Now they show them all the time. Its laziness, cheap and not a good costume department. The clothing of the Berman era looked more futuristic than what kurtzman is giving us.

Next thing that really bugs me is 20th/21st century slang in the 32nd cebtury. Sigh.

In almost every one of his TNG episodes Wesley mirrored how street Bill Cosby was on the other channel.

They dressed the poor kid up like an edgy urban 20th century superstar and it did not age well.

Amazing! Just in case it's deleted, here's the big spoiler:
They did get Avery Brooks to record some lines for the end of E5

Not exactly.

Brooks had earlier recorded some lines of poetry he wrote for a separate project, and he gave them permission to use it. He didn’t record it specifically for SFA.

Slang bothers me in reality more than the clothes. I don't mind characters talking with a more contemporary feel exactly but you don't need them to sound so 2025 or I guess now 2026. I have have a theory that some cuss words and slang are almost timeless were some is so specifically linked to a certain time and the last one is what they should avoid. As much as I like Picard season 3 nobody in the future is going to be called a hipster.

TBH though, everything is being translated for our convenience. It's not like 25th, let alone 32nd, century English would sound anything like today.

At the end of the day, this is a show released in 2026 for a 2026 audience. Will clothing and language be the same as portrayed here as it really will be in the 32nd century? Probably not. Can one put a level of suspension of disbelief in order to get through it? Absolutely. Frankly, the Berman era civilian clothes were godawful. I’m glad to see them not followed.

In a pigs eye.

Next you'll be dipping little girl pigtails in ink wells.

Two things will date a show the most: use of current (at the time) 'hit' songs and current (at the time) slang.

So I do agree with the point that the use contemporary slang/sayings can take you out of what you watch a bit and might suspend disbelief in parts.

Miniskirts and go go boots.
Cosby sweaters.
Gasp! T shirts!

All signs of the time of production.
I raise an eyebrow at such anachronisms.

Oh. Do they arent using 20th and 21st century slang and swear words?

Exactly. The language was one of the things they watched in all treks. Language definitely changes over time. Even in 50 years. Yet in kurtzmans productions they all speak exactly like we do. Slang and swearing. In Star Trek the Voyage Hone they went out of their way to explain how language had changed. Kurtzman doesnt understand that at all.

Define 20th century slang? Swear words have been around for a long time, with fuck being attested to 1475 CE.

Except, that doesn't track from the the film before it. "You Klingon bastard." being the prime example, as well as "son of a bitch."

I guess Star Trek III and Star Trek IV are in alternate timelines from each other :vulcan:

Zippers have been incorporated into every one of the costumes since the beginning. We can see them in Spock and Kirk's collars in Where No Man Has Gone Before. Sulu's early collar in The Corbomite Maneuver has one plain as day. The Eisenhower-style TNG jackets zip up in the back. The First Contact uniforms have clear zippers.

This is absolutely a non issue that you're complaining about just to complain.
