Well, I enjoyed that. Hunter, Yashere, and Picardo are all fabulous. The Athena is gorgeous to me. The kids all have lots of potential. I particularly liked Genesis - you so rarely see smartass women like her.

Watching the Athena land again for the millionth time and I just noticed they forgot to put the solar panels on the GGB in the fly by shot, and you can see cars driving along it lol. Oops
The Solar Panels are there in every other shot.
The fly by shot appears to be actual footage of the bridge, which might be why.

I finally got around to watching the first episode of STA, and came away holding a mixed bag. The character introductions were pretty well done, if a bit bland. It was great to see Picardo back as The Doctor, and Holly Hunter did a better job than I expected given the teasers. Giamatti not only chewed the scenery, he swallowed, digested and regurgitated it, and got to be a tad too much. I regret that Tatiana didn't have a bigger role, but just being there was a plus I guess. Sandro did a nice turn as the male lead... not sure what to think about Kerrice as SAM... Data she's definitely not--yet, maybe. Production values were magnificent, some money was definitely spent on the special effects.
Hopefully the show decides what it wants to be... action/adventure, search for mom, or teenagers in space. After all the battle scenes, it was a little jarring to hear San Francisco at the end; although the scene was well shot, the choice of song was a head scratcher, even though the tune is a classic.
I guess I'd give it an 8 overall. Covered lots of ground and wasn't badly paced.

True, but I appreciate that it shows how much higher the moral standards are in the future. It doesn't work as a one-to-one metaphor; it does work at showing how low we are now, that in the future at least some of us will recognize that a child does not deserve to be punished for the sins of a parent (which you do when you imprison someone, in the abstract at least, you punish both that person and everyone in that person's life).
Just watched Ep 1 last night. Solid 8/10. I hated the parental separation bit, c'mon, it didn't need to be so harsh. But so contemporary in true ST fashion. Considering that it was referencing current events, it fit the story well and didn't feel forced to me.
The character introductions were good. What I like is that there is no Wesley or Riker, all the cadets feel normal, human, and the senior officers feel grounded.

Holo-emitters were damaged, not offline, and medical personel in short supply. The plan was to simply stabilise Lura in the Lab, they may have assumed the Doctor was offline if they didn't see the Ushers.

I wonder if the Doctor threw his mobile emitter down the hall would he suddenly appear as it landed or fly with it? I don't recall it's range but on Voyager it seemed to be needed at least in arm's reach...
In VOY, the ME could only be removed if there was another holographic field to take over the program. Otherwise you would have to disable or turn off the EMH program from the emitter control panel.
Kurtzman is a professional who knows his way around Hollywood. He walks the walk. Makes things. Not just a commenter. Not just a spitballing twerp. I support every single producer, director, actor and writer that has ever worked on filmed Star Trek stuff.
You may want to consider that the post you replied to was a month and a half old and forty one pages ago, the discussion has moved on significantly since then.
That is a very poor position to take. Producers can be bad at their job. Berman famously was extremely sexist, and often times expected the audience to not be able to differentiate different Trek shows.
I personally would not recommend a carte blanche approach to any worker.
