Spoilers Starfleet Academy General Discussion Thread

If season two does indeed end on a cliffhanger, I have a big "Ffffffuck you!" for whoever decided to do that. Cliffhangers on uncertain-future shows is an asshole move.

At least with Trek you know you will at least get a comic or novel that sort of brings closure but I still agree. Bad thing to do to the fans who like the show.

And those comics and novels aren't canon but at least they offer an alternate vision of where a character or story go after the series or movie concludes, and that's part of why so many fans latched onto the "Trip Didn't Really Die" novels post-2005. Not canon, but at least they weren't "TATV...."

Do you all think the reason they haven't really done many outdoor scene's since the pilot is that it's hard to disguise the area around Toronto as San Fransisco?

Because the limited shooting locations are starting to get a bit blatant at this point.

He's really not dead, as long as we remember him.
Does that mean he doesn't wear clothes if I remember him like this

Probably just cheaper to always film on sets or I guess they have something like that Volume thing I think it is called. They used it all the time on The Mandalorian.

All true, but not justifications for the bigotry expressed online.

This is the only online place I read fan comments or talk about Star trek. Ive never seen racist talk here against the Burnham character. Is it somewhere else? Maybe people that aren't real star trek fans like us or are just familiar with the show that use racist language or are agitators? That I have no doubt of. Online can bring some nasty people out. People that just like to cause trouble. Online video games have that problem. Games that have in game chats there always seems to be some immature asshole who uses racist language or insults. From legitimate fans of star trek the way Burnham was written was the problem. A starfleet officer that knocked her captain out and got starfleet into the klingon war was something that made little sense. She was celebrated as an amazing officer only a couple years later. It just made no sense. Sloppy writing.

Cheaper or not would depend on how much post production work is required for a scene.

I had Thrall as my Waze voice for a bit, and I found that the fact that he couldn't use street names or similar severely limited the utility once the novelty of my GPS talking to me about honor and being wary of ambushes in the valleys wore off. I suspect that the same would be true in this case. :(

Thanks to Karim Diané reposting them in a story on Instagram the other day I was made aware of the fact that for the last few days the makeup department of Starfleet Academy had shared many image of the design process and makeup application of some of the various colorful background aliens we see on the show. What’s interesting about these is that all of them come with species names not mentioned on screen. So I guess none of these are exactly official (yet).

Almost all of them are a variation on the theme of combining minimal latex skin applications in the face with a bright colored skin and wig, some with face paint and some with more glittery elements. I think they look cool in the background, but they honestly also look a bit like a budget saving idea, which is honestly fine by me. Not featured so far are Cheronians, Orions as well as Dzolo and Tarima’s coral-skinned friend from the War College.

First up there’s the yellow-skinned alien @Tosk lovingly (?) has likened to the “I like Turtles” Zombie kid. His species (as played by background actor Ugo Agulefo) is apparently called Jeh’han, and makeup artist Shauna Llewellyn talks about how the look is supposed to “reflect [people of color], our cultural influences and add diversity”. I admit the makeup looks a little goofy as far as background aliens go, but reading about the inspiration I can now totally see the afrofuturistic influences.

Next up are those aliens with reddish skin that feature what looks like reflective mirror piece on parts of their face. The makeup artists know them as Rexxian. I first thought this would be the same species as coral-shinned girl with shells glued to her face, but upon closer inspection they look different.

These aliens are called the Chend and basically have bright red skin with silvery marks all over. A bad case of space acne?

This cobalt blue/gold alien is called Fezzen, was designed by makeup artist Anita Guastella and is apparently one of the makeup teams favorites. The design somewhat prominently features in “Series Acclimation Mil” where SAM is taking a photo with one of them. Would love to see them in “The Dress”.

This person’s species is called Drumhok and they feature a pink/teal skincolor. Very vaporwave-y!

This species with pinkish skin has been dubbed Haplee.

By the way, is it me or does Jay-Dan actually look better without the glued-on beard? Looks definitely younger, and I think it fits the character better.

Kind of the opposite effect of what we see with George Hawkins, who does definitely look better with a beard. :)

For good measure (and for @tenmei’s pleasure) here’s Alexander Eling in the makeup chair to become B’Avi. Are these the pointiest ears we ever saw on a Vulcan? These things look dangerous.

I wonder if the make up designed was a Star Wars fan, because the marking's on the chin match Ahsoka's forehead markings, but with the diamonds below instead of above
