Starfleet Academy General Discussion Thread

Season 3 came out in 2022. Season 4 of The Orville has not even begun production. I’ll believe they’re actually making a new season when we see the episodes at this point. Even if they started production in January 2026, it’s likely the new episodes wouldn’t drop until 2027, ten years after the first season premiered. That’s a long time for four seasons.

As long as its good it doesnt matter.

ORV's first season was pretty meh. A largely unfunny comedy that had a few standout episodes.

In the second season, they leaned more heavily into character drama and serialization, turning it into a sort of DS9-lite. There were a handful of stinkers, but it was the peak.

In Season 3, seems like they wanted to show of their bigger budgets, but the more "cinematic" feel didn't add much to the show. Plus Seth cast his girlfriend who couldn't act in a key role, which brought down the entire season.

It's been hit or miss throughout, TBH, though I do think the highs of the show for me (A Happy Refrain, A Tale of Two Topas) are better than anything done in modern Trek. Because Seth isn't afraid to have episodes be about something beyond "this is what happens in the plot this week."

The Orville has been quite successful.

Those type of flame emitting devices require a 10 foot actor clearance.

Discovery did not keep it's actors 10 feet away every time they were going off.
Bullshit. Stunt coordinators are very well trained and practical on-set pyrotechnics are always treated with intense scrutiny and protections for everyone on set.

You're not only wrong, you're insulting the work of multiple trained professionals who work their asses off. I get it - you hate Discovery, but this kind of complaining-just-to-complain bullshit ain't gonna cut it, jack.

Nope.

I've already spoken. That's how it works, right? We prejudge a show based upon preconceived notions? Well, I don't like the Orville since Season 2. It won't be good.

All three seasons have great fan reviews on rotten tomatoes. Sorry but the scores are higher than many kurtzman productions when we look at critics and fan reviews. You can't deny the success.

Reviews mean nothing to a series if nobody is watching. If the show were truly successful, we wouldn’t be sitting here wondering whether there’s going to be a fourth season after three and a half years.

Discovery lasted five seasons, produced 20 more episodes and generated two spinoffs. A much more reality-based metric then Rotten Tomatoes scores will ever be. You can't deny the success. Although you'll try.

Yeah, I'm no cheerleader for Discovery, but by every meaningful metric, it outperformed The Orville. And I'm saying that as someone who actually liked The Orville more than Discovery. Granted, that isn’t saying much. My opinion of The Orville is solidly lukewarm.

The Orville again has much better critic snd fan scores. Also the Orville is coming back. The show utilizes much of the Berman era of writers. Better writing, better sets and better effects.

And, again, fan and critics scores, especially on Rotten Tomatoes, are not a legitimate measure of success.

As to the rest, the sets and effects look like they belong in a 90s production, and as for the writing -- if I never see a another Star Trek script from Brannon Braga ever again (although, I will admit that he did his best work on the Orville) I will be happy.

And as for the Orville ever actually coming back, every report I've seen said that production was going to start in 2025. They've got 3 weeks.

How many times at this point have online trolls review-bombed shows and series on RT?

The metrics from that website are absolutely fucking useless because of how susceptible to manipulation it is. I still don’t know why studios actually use it for marketing purposes.

Unfortunately, in the streaming era, we have no good source for metrics. Rating sites can be review bombed, and viewing stats are hard to find (and often quite dodgy).
