Finally watched it:
Pros: Ortegas is confident enough to be back in the pilots chair.
It was a nice character episode, I like how she got along with the Gorn.
What I didn't like, and what led me to deduct 3 points from the episode was it trying to squeeze into TOS. The Metrons? Metro's? (dont care) and them trying to bootstrap into the Arena....just leave it as a mystery? This isn't TOS. I never watched TOS in full and the constant callbacks and nods and whatever is just irritating. It's like the 7th episode this season that dealt with TOS stuff and I'm done. It's cheap, lazy writing.
And Pike allowing Uhura to fudge numbers on the report is just totally unprofessional.

Pike was going to mount the rescue no matter what the numbers said. Wouldn't be the first Starfleet captain to do so, either.
Right, that's the captains prerogative. He needs to have all the info however.
And he did, both before and after Uhura manipulated it.
I've seen a couple of TOS episodes here and there. I grew up on TNG.If you haven't seen TOS, there's a lot you won't get in SNW.
That's not a bug.
I don't object to the occasional reference or easter egg, but I do object to the constant callbacks - it's supposed to be it's own show and stand on it's own. I don't need a prequel to the second worst TOS episode just to explain away a visual retcon.
Just like I didn't need the Augments Virus to explain away the ridged klingons.
