Finally watched it:
Pros: Ortegas is confident enough to be back in the pilots chair.
It was a nice character episode, I like how she got along with the Gorn.

What I didn't like, and what led me to deduct 3 points from the episode was it trying to squeeze into TOS. The Metrons? Metro's? (dont care) and them trying to bootstrap into the Arena....just leave it as a mystery? This isn't TOS. I never watched TOS in full and the constant callbacks and nods and whatever is just irritating. It's like the 7th episode this season that dealt with TOS stuff and I'm done. It's cheap, lazy writing.

And Pike allowing Uhura to fudge numbers on the report is just totally unprofessional.

7/10

If you haven't seen TOS, there's a lot you won't get in SNW.

That's not a bug.
I've seen a couple of TOS episodes here and there. I grew up on TNG.
I don't object to the occasional reference or easter egg, but I do object to the constant callbacks - it's supposed to be it's own show and stand on it's own. I don't need a prequel to the second worst TOS episode just to explain away a visual retcon.

Just like I didn't need the Augments Virus to explain away the ridged klingons.

Could be wrong, but I don't think Mudd was talking about callbacks.

"Arena"???

Yeah, this is why I’m not a big fan of ENT S4. I don’t need convoluted stories to explain certain real world production changes with an in-universe reason.

“It is a long story” was all I ever needed.

I started pretty late so I don't want to see spoilers, but if Erica is on a moon/gas giant, and there are toxins that might rain down on her, how is the atmosphere there breathable?

Just watching it now on my SNW catch up of season 3 and that wasn't even a night sky - it was literally space. There is clearly zero or very little atmosphere, so what the hell is she breathing and whats stopping her from freezing to death. Just make her wear a space suit FFS. These writers are killing me :cardie:

Also Enterprise has been there for 2 days and have ran scans but didn't send a probe into the wormhole. Literally every other Trek show would of had "Send a probe" line as literally the first move.

I'm not much of a fan of the latest season but this was one of the few things I did really like - they're eschewing realism and embracing pure pulp, in visuals and aesthetics if not often in writing. Ortegas walking around on a planet that probably shouldn't be inhabitable by humans is a great visual and lends itself to the alien weirdness of the whole setup.

Yeh I know i'm not allowed to say bad things about Star Trek.

So the episode has just finished...The stuff with the Gorn was quite interesting though when you have limited time to be rescued, spending it playing chess seems very odd. I was starting to think they forgot about Ortega's PTSD so nice they did an episode around it.

But the writers again know little about Trek. The away team executed the Gorn, why weren't the weapons set to stun and they were the aggressors in the situation, a clear violation on how Starfleet away teams operate. They literally executed her and we get no follow up with Ortega tearing them a new one like she did to that Metron.

No, you said it was killing you. I was having a dry response back because some turns of phrase amuse me.

I don't care if you say bad things about Trek. I say them all the time about TNG.

You're not alone in this observation.

I don't I have ever seen a Trek away team act in such an aggressive manner as a first move?

From what we know about Starfleet they would surely face consequences for that execution. The drop off in writing from season1 & 2 is alarming!

Happened in TOS in Friday's Child. Worf could be aggressive, especially early on.

Eh...I guess. It's still in what I've dubbed the"Fry range" of good episodes so I'm not so alarmed.

And Worf stabbed a guy, and faced no consequences. Jadzia assisted in a revenge plot and faced no consequences. Tuvok violated a planet's trust.

Depends on the need of the story and to how good Starfleet training is.

Worf did get a reprimand on record for leaving his combadge and going AWOL. There was no need for consequences for him killing Duras because the Klingons considered the matter closed, and it happened on their ship.

Jadzia wouldn't face any consequences because they were going after someone outside Federation jurisdiction. The Albino was wanted by the Klingons. She was assisting. The only issue that could have been made was if Sisko officially denied her the leave of absence during that time, which he must have since he didn't give her a reprimand or anything.

When did Tuvok violate a planet's trust?

Prime Factors:

JANEWAY: I don't even know where to start. I want you to explain to me how you, of all people, could be involved in this.
TUVOK: It is quite simple, Captain. You have made it clear on many occasions that your highest goal for the crew is to get them home. But in this instance, your standards would not allow you to violate Sikarian law. Someone had to spare you the ethical dilemma. I was the logical choice, and so I chose to act.
JANEWAY: You did it for me because you knew I couldn't.
TUVOK: I accept the consequences of my actions. I expect to loose my commission and to be court-martialled when we return to Federation space.

Sisko made it clear that Jadzia was wrong. That she didn't suffer a reprimand doesn't negate her actions.
