Ok, and? What's that have to do with the original set being dated?

But I will say that having TOS characters appear in SNW makes perfect sense, especially as we get closer to Kirk taking command. I, for one, love the much needed character development that many of the original characters are finally receiving.
It's been so nice to see Christine Chapel as a fully-developed person instead of a stock nurse stereotype whose only defining attribute was her crush on Spock.

There WAS no new Trek of any kind for four whole years between 2005 and 2009 unless you count the Remastered TOS episodes airing in syndication, and those were TV episodes that were forty years old with new special effects inserted. If you don't count the Kelvin Timeline movies there were 12 years with no new Star Trek.

Realizing that TOS was just what they had the budget to do at the time, and was not close to how Gene or others would have wanted to do it, is the crucial first step in ridding oneself of obsessions with "canon" and "continuity."
I'd actually say in 1966 they made it as they wanted it for a TV series of the day that expected to be forgotten once it ended. I doubt they sat around and lamented not having the money to make it look "better." They weren't making a feature and they certainly weren't concerned about how it would look 60 years hence. I take everything Roddenberry said about TOS after the fact with HUGE grains of salt.

When they DID make a feature, yup they updated it because it was a TV show with a limited (but still generous for the day) budget and a gazillion dollar motion picture on a MUCH larger screen needed to to be updated. What didn't they keep the design closer to the TV series? Easy: not because it looked bad, but because the novelty of color television was over and irrelevant for a 1979 movie. So the colors were muted, but the overall design was retained. Styles of what the future may look like changed dramatically in 10 years, so the sets had to reflect that. Everything changes. It would have made more sense in universe if they said 10 years had passed and not 2. It would have also explained why everyone LOOKS 10 years older. But they wanted it to be sooner, so visually it's a more drastic change.

Not every change or update is made because the original is somehow "bad." Out of date isn't a bad thing. Technology movies forward, styles change, and if you're going to appeal to a modern audience, you have to make updates.

I prefer the SNW Enterprise to the Bad Robot version, but I still wish the sets were less cavernous. A smaller bridge with a viewscreen other than a window would have been my preference. Other than everything being supersized with a smaller crew than Kirk had, I like what they did with the sets. They are very tastefully updated versions of the original designs. And I love the hand props like the communicators and phasers.

The TOS bridge looks fine, but there are obvious things that stand out, like the wrinkled paper viewscreen displays over the science and communication stations and, yes, some wood grain. But by and large, it DOES hold up - but it's still dated. Just like a 1969 Ford would be. It looks great, but it doesn't really fit in today's world.

It doesn't bother me any more than the original effects do. It's not Nostalgia Glasses but it is "watching in context." My mind shuts it off because of the age of the production.

You mentioned nostalgia. Metrons and Trelane. Its been like this since the end of seasin one. These writers cant wait to get to Kirk. This was supposed to be a show about Pike and his crew but its really a long slog toward the Enterprise crew and Kirk's command. We see less and less of pike now. Basically getting us somewhere we've already been for 80 episodes and 6 motion pictures.

12 years is a long time to go w/o new Star Trek Content being made / aired.

Been doing that for a lot longer. Star Trek was hardly my first show and it won't be the last time I decide, "Eh, not for me." *see avatar.*
Oh I agree and I've dropped Trek's before and dozens of other shows. But some fans seem absolutely terrified at the prospect of "no new Star Trek." I get not wanting to lose a favorite show, but that's how TV works. Series end. Shrug it off and do something else.

Same. It's ridiculous to hold on to things forever.

"Goodbye, Jean-Luc, you had such potential. But then all good things must come to an end."

It's been almost 50 years since the last new episode of Space:1999, but somehow I got through it. ;)

There's always something else to check out. Star Trek (which is just a brand name now) doesn't need to go on indefinitely.
Star Trek is one of the TOP IP brands in this World right now.

TPTB / Rights Owner would be stupid to buy this Franchise and Sit on it, not making money.

That's why we're getting more content for Star Wars, Star Trek, every major IP out there.

If your IP isn't big / well recognized like "Space: 1999", I can see why that isn't getting new content.

"Star Trek" isn't on that level, it's FAR higher up in value.

So don't be surprised that we get more content, more products, more merchandise.

Yes. We're seeing an ensemble piece, and Pike is not the lead character; he's a part of the ensemble.

That's what Star Trek is. Except when it isn't.

How dare writers move towards the most well known facet of Star Trek as an IP. The nerve of some people try to *checks notes* make money. Nonsense, I say, pure nonsense... :shifty:

Gotcha. So, what you're saying is we need is Star Trek Canon Great Man of HistoryElon Musk to purchase the franchise, excise most of the garbage from said canon, and make a proper 24th century continuation. I'm totally on board.

Though it might be tough to convince Elon to cut Disco from canon considering it's where he gets his Great Man status.

Why are you bringing him into this?

He has nothing to do with this.
