But-but-but post-1979 Gene's Vision™!!!

Kirk's disintegrating the Ceti Eel coming out of Chekov's ear was a betrayal of Star Trek's ethos and proof Meyer and Bennett didn't understand Star Trek. Kirk and McCoy should've been examining the eel to learn more about it, according to Gene.
Well, Gene was — not wrong in that instance, but certainly not in tune with what someone will instinctively do when a creepy-crawly exists the bloody body of a friend. Kirk might very well have felt bad about it, thinking about it later.

Re stunning the Gorn, Google’s presumably non-canon “AI Overview” answer to the query “Does stun affect Gorn?” yields the following:

Stun affects the Gorn, but they are highly resistant to it due to their tough hide and physiology.
. A standard phaser set to a low or medium stun setting is unlikely to incapacitate a Gorn and will most likely just anger them.
To effectively stun a Gorn, the following is needed:
  • High-intensity stun settings: Multiple phaser shots on a high stun setting would be required to bring down an adult Gorn.
  • Maximum setting for lethal force: A phaser set to its highest, "kill" setting would instantly vaporize a Gorn, but lower lethal settings do not guarantee a one-hit kill.
  • Energy-resistant skin: Their hide is naturally resistant to energy, likely from evolving to absorb and diffuse thermal energy from dangerous sources. This further reduces the effectiveness of energy-based stun attacks.

Yeah. It was a bad retcon. These guys are just trying to outdo TOS by taking its stories now and thinking they are impriloving them. They arent.

I was really hoping this had the makings of a classic along the lines of Darmok, but it... did not. The "agree" and "disagree" translator jerry-rig was rather dissatisfying, not just in terms of communication, but in execution--no real animation in the Gorn's reaction, which was needed given the emotionless computer responses. I did like the problem-solving sequences, with Spock being the skeptic but working toward a solution Uhura, and some special effects were very good, but the darkness took away from the Gorn-Ortegas interactions. The vaccine mission delay was extraordinarily well-worn even for Trek, and the ripoff of Enemy Mine would have had to have been done better pacing and timing wise. I did like the chess and Gorn game scene, but never got the sense of any real attachment forming. Other bugaboos for me were the Metrons showing up in the final two minutes for no good reason, and the swift kill of the Gorn and fast mourning of it? Maybe I'm being too hard on the episode, but given the previous installments, I expected better... Barely an 8 for me after first viewing.

You do understand what a Terrarium is right?

And that it is a preserving construct created by 'someone' to cultivate 'something' to make it better.

So it actually is quite "clever" for the writers to include a superior race that we've seen before, and that they are apparently attempting to discover whether or not the human race is worth 'cultivating'.

Even the Q in their own clumsy way, were doing pretty much the same thing.
Yes, I know what a terrarium is. Just because some people don't like how the Metron was added doesn't mean they don't know the definition of certain words.

You find it clever? (slow applause) Good for you. Not necessary to try the condescension route assuming someone doesn't know a definition to show you have an opposite opinion.

So tell me then, what would you have done to make the episode live up to its title?

What about a Men in Black style ending of the Metrons picking up the planet after the Enterprise leaves, like someone would carry a Terrarium?

SNW keeps recycling characters from tos.
Ok, and? What's that have to do with the original set being dated?

But I will say that having TOS characters appear in SNW makes perfect sense, especially as we get closer to Kirk taking command. I, for one, love the much needed character development that many of the original characters are finally receiving.
