With respect to the distance aspect have you ever really watched Star Trek?

Like I said, it still needs to make sense. Distance has always been...."hazy" in how it's played but here it just sticks out a bit more.

Their crew are having a problem with their katras and, hey, a Vulcan expert in katras Una knows just happens to be nearby! In any other work of fiction that's a poor plot contrivance that shouldn't be waved away, given the distances and speeds here it's just plain absurd.

I have mixed feeling about this episode. There were some very funny moments. But there were also some annoying parts.

Love the idea of a Vulcan named Doug. Also the yelling Vulcan Pike. lol

Way too much talk of Katras for my taste. When Spock died Kirk, Mccoy and rest of the crew had no clue what a katra was. Almost as bad as ENT where they had Archer carry the freaking Katra of the most famous Vulcan ever. I wished the prequels had stayed away from Katras.
IDK, the fact that some know about Vulcan Katras and how later series have made use of that knowledge isn't any more bothersome than the knowledge of and how many Vulcan Mind Melds have worked.

In both the 23rd and 24th centuries, many humans you haven't encountered Vulcans still don't believe Nind Melds are realthing. It's all a part of Vulcan Mysticism to many.

Sure it would. Star Trek fans do it all of the time.

For me, this is a case where the problem too easily just happened to have a solution that could come over inside a commercial break with ne meaningful time passing. If they said days have passed between calling Doug and him showing up, fine. Here it's just "Doug can help!" and he's just there... In space.

I struggle to think of a similiar occurance in Trek where I just accepted such contrivance.

Isn’t Doug on the planet they’re orbiting?

The show suffers horribly from small universe syndrome,
The entire franchise does. But then there is a lot more dramatic potential in the characters meeting someone from their past than not.
Lol. Don't come for TMP bro! Only STARSHIP in 'interception range'. Don't forget, V'Ger was travelling really, really fast so any ships behind it would be unable to catch up in the time available.
So there are zero ships between the Klingon border and the Sol system? Now pull the other leg.

It's said he's "nearby." If he's on the planet they're around (along with Kirk) that's even more contrived. It's how I feel. I agree to disagree with you and do not wish to battle any further. (You seem quick to jump on me.)

We just happen to be on line at the same time right now. Nothing more than that.

Now....Robert Todd Lincoln being present at two other Presidential assassinations after his father's? THAT'S eerie and truly odd timing.

7/10

I liked this episode, I'm a sucker for stoic Vulcan sarcasm irritating our crew, but boy were there a lot of contrivances. Small universe syndrome, as previously noted, was in full effect. The relative ease in transitioning people into other species with just a hypo gets a Vulcan eyebrow raise. "Unimatrix Zero" gets similar justified criticism when transitioning the crew back from horrific Borg mutilation to human in just a few hours. We can make humans into other aliens in seconds now. The Vulcan crew are really going to be allowed to remain on duty in Vulcan clothing despite obvious mental modification? A lot of the heavy lifting this episode happened off screen. Doug's travel, the transition back to human, the 30 second nuclear reactor repair... They just kind of did a hand wavy it's done moving on with the plot.

Zero Starships in V'Ger's path that can sustain the speed to catch up and maintain extremely high warp long enough to merge warp bubbles. Enterprise is approaching from the other direction so all she has to do is build speed to match V'Ger's speed momentarily. Most ships can only sustain high warp for a few hours. Enterprise is just throwing a hook in a sandworm as it passes.

And I am unanimous in this.

Epsilon IX station was in the way, and we know from the subspace messages we heard that the scout ship Columbia may or may not have been in the vicinity around the time V'Ger showed up, so the Enterprise wasn't the only Starfleet and Federation representation in that area. Just the only one that we saw other than Epsilon IX.

Again, are there no Starships between the Klingon border and the Sol System?

I do love the line in TWOK now that we know the Star Trek quadrant designations. "But we're the only ship in the quadrant" to deal with investigating the mystery at Regula One. Whether Alpha or Beta, THE ONLY SHIP IN EITHER QUADRANT THE FEDERATION OCCUPIES? Wow. Starfleet is like that really bad football team that leaves huge gaps in its defense and loses games 49 to 7.
