As @Rahul said upthread, it was a bit "paint by the numbers." Definitely had a "Big Goodbye" flavor to it. OTOH, the cast killed it, and the over-the-top faux Kirk acting by Wesley was hilarious. As were the "outtakes"

Directed by Jonathan Frakes - you can't get a bigger Trek fan in the directors chair than JF.

In terms of Meta, ehhhh, every show has contradictions in canon. IDGAF.

9/10

"The Last Frontier", real show co-opted by the AI for the mystery or totally made up by the AI? La'An seem familiar with the cast and the show. Perhaps another piece of media she enjoyed as a kid?

Why would I. They are ruining the legacy of tos by trying to replace it. Its good to be aware of that.

Not in my opinon. Its obvious.
Yeah hardly. If a Trek writing team was judged/fired by ONE bad episode, the entire writing staff of TNG should have been fired after The Naked Now and definitely Code of Honor.:guffaw:

I'm not sure if the writers are trying to replace Star Trek; it's more like they view Star Trek as a cultural mythology to remix and revisit in increasingly insular, claustrophobic ways.

It's less like they want to replace TOS and more like they view it (and Star Trek as a whole) as a toybox whose ideas can be endlessly regurgitated, then mixed and matched (Trelane and Korby! Romulans and Khan! Holodecks and Gorn!). I don't pick up any malice or desire to replace TOS from them, even though I think this is a terrible way to write television.

Picard S3 is the most obvious instance, it's literally just someone playing with Star Trek action figures. "And then Worf takes out fifteen Borg with his bat'leth! And then the Changelings show up! And then Ro comes aboard!"

If you're going to insult me why even discuss anything?
An observation of cognitive distortions is not an insult. Humans deal with them every single day, and bias towards the negative is perhaps the most common.

Not all Trek is good. Nor is it all bad. It has its ups and downs like every other series and franchise, especially when a franchise is going on 60 years. That's a lot of content to look at, not just the bad.

Indeed, yes.

Not only that, but these episodes does not do anything to affect the legacy of TOS.

From Memory Alpha:
Anson Mount copies his (Gene Roddenberry's) mannerisms and enjoyment of alcohol.

Obviously on the second. But did anyone get any kind of Roddenberry imitation from Mount? I mean, if you're a fan of a certain age (the kind of people who listened to Inside Star Trek and watched the intro to The Cage or various TNG press promos) you know that GR had a very distinctive style of speaking. And I don't think that was it.

The notion of a Hollywood writer hitting the bottle is a novel one and could not be a coincidence. ;)

In another context it could be sure.

I'm certain the captain character's speech cadence was more likely based on Christopher Plummer or Marion Brando as well.

Saw this on reddit. I mean, lots of people hold their hands that way, but yeah.

Sorry, Mount's character doesn't sound anything like Roddenberry to me.

And he's a dead ringer for Isaac Asimov.

He was definitely an amalgam character. I thought there were elements of Harlan Ellison in there too. And even elements to his story that were reminiscent of other writers, producers, and actors who had been forced to part ways with Trek.
