As @Rahul said upthread, it was a bit "paint by the numbers." Definitely had a "Big Goodbye" flavor to it. OTOH, the cast killed it, and the over-the-top faux Kirk acting by Wesley was hilarious. As were the "outtakes"

Directed by Jonathan Frakes - you can't get a bigger Trek fan in the directors chair than JF.

In terms of Meta, ehhhh, every show has contradictions in canon. IDGAF.

It is stated in TK Bellows contract, seen briefly, torn in half, in #StarTrekSNW's "A Space Adventure Hour", that "The Last Frontier" is an 1/2 hour (30 minutes) show, unlike #StarTrekTOS.

Yeah hardly. If a Trek writing team was judged/fired by ONE bad episode, the entire writing staff of TNG should have been fired after The Naked Now and definitely Code of Honor.

I'm not sure if the writers are trying to replace Star Trek; it's more like they view Star Trek as a cultural mythology to remix and revisit in increasingly insular, claustrophobic ways.

It's less like they want to replace TOS and more like they view it (and Star Trek as a whole) as a toybox whose ideas can be endlessly regurgitated, then mixed and matched (Trelane and Korby! Romulans and Khan! Holodecks and Gorn!). I don't pick up any malice or desire to replace TOS from them, even though I think this is a terrible way to write television.

Picard S3 is the most obvious instance, it's literally just someone playing with Star Trek action figures. "And then Worf takes out fifteen Borg with his bat'leth! And then the Changelings show up! And then Ro comes aboard!"
