There's a lot to make fun of in his performance, but I'd rather see that come from writers who appreciate his performance to begin with, rather than the usual "ha ha ha he talks weird" stuff that's been done to death. This felt like it went into the latter - I think Wesley, to his credit, was trying to give the performance a little bit of nuance and not play it as an outright lazy "SPEA-king LIKE.... THIS with STRANGE enunci-ATION" thing that hack impersonators have done for decades, but the writing definitely didn't seem to share that approach.
Ok, but are we going to apply the same standards to a show in the franchise that we would to a late night comedy sketch show? Galaxy Quest, Black Mirror, and Orville all took on the Shatner mythos or the heroic image of the captain, but didn't do it so directly. I'm not sure Shatner needed to be mocked, his mannerisms in particular, by a franchise he helped make .

So Seth McFarland can outright do Shatner on the Orville?
Go for it. His character couldn't get much worse.

Shatner even commented that he thought Allen was trying to do a Shatner impression when in the episode itself of Galaxy Quest, while Allen notes he drew a lot of inspiration from Yul Bryner in The Ten Commandments.

Yeah, it's not a plot I have any interest in, I was just trying to cushion my criticism in case people thought I was aggrieved at the very idea of Shatner's acting being joked about.

I agree. They outright mocked shatner and TOS. Now they are out to remake to tos. They dont like the way the show looked, was written or acted. Insulting the people who started this

Eh. I laughed at the chair, and had a good time with the episode. No, I wouldn’t want this episode’s approach to become the standard one, but it beats the hell out of “A Fistful of Datas” (which I always thought terrible). Nor would I engage in Totally Shocking! Shocking! catastrophized overthinking about it.

In order to use the spore drive they either need to enslave a being or genetically enhance a crew member as a navigator and violate Federation law.
the ship also needs to be refit to use the drive. Voyager wouldn't be able to replicate it and use it right away.

Amazing, everything you said is completely wrong.

I am somewhat split on this episode - which is funny, because the whole thread seems to be.

The "bad" first:
It was the most by-the-numbers standard holodeck malfunction episode we have seen on Star Trek since like the 90s.
I'm already used to SNW being something of a "best of" of previous Trek plots. But this one added literally nothing new or exciting to the holodeck malfunction plotline.

I also didn't like the holodeck plot itself. The murder mystery too on the nose, the twist the bare minimum for a mystery plot. The Trek parody show itself was horrendous.
Also didn't like the non-holodeck plotline - Scotty not being able to reach anyone was really forced.

So what did I do like?

The fucking characters. This one was clearly an actors dream episode. And they nailed it. Anson Mount (again) playing against type was the absolute highlight. I hated Wesley's "Captain" (als always) - but he nailed it as the ashole show star. Just everyone bringing their absolute A-game.

And goddamn, that alone made the episode as a whole not just watchable, but up a goddamn delight!

Not sure what to think about that ending - expect for "goddamn Peck getting some on this show!"
On a whole, I think SNW might be turning a little bit too "meta" overall.
In what might maybe my fastest turnaround in terms of re-evaluations:

While my overall opinion on this episode hasn't changed (I like it, but also think it's somewhat "iffy" in many regards):

After thinking about it, I think the Spock "twist" (he's the holographic murderer) was quite good in retrospect.

It didn't land perfectly for me on first watch in the episode - mainly because the "rules" about how realistic characters the characters can make weren't quite clear yet (especially as it's a prequel & shouldn't be there in the first place), and the Spock/La'an thing came - well, not completely out of nowhere, but still quite fast.

But after all - it IS one of the better holodeck twists. Not as clever as Dr Moriarty or "our man Bashir". But IMO a close follow-up, still a new & unique twist on the technology, and way above the usual holodeck slob the 90s & 00s series were full of.
