You have knowledge on how to properly place rockets on a derelict spacecraft in such a manner that they would launch said derelict into a decaying orbit and crash into a very specific site on a planet?

Dude, that's frigging awesome!! I wish I had that kinda knowledge!!

No, but one outside on top of the saucer and one inside just seems odd.

Liking this Scott, but his accent means more hitting the "replay" button with CC.
So an actual Scots accent then. ;)
The small universe syndrome of Palia knowing Scotty,
She was an instructor at the Academy teaching engineering for like a Century. Makes sense she would know Scott and many others attending the Academy, especially those majoring in engineering.

I forget to mention how when Ortegas joined the away mission I began wondering if she was a goner and then when they were beamed up I was like "Oh, guess I was wrong." Then we find out they were beamed up by the Gorn.

Maybe not. Obviously when you have her at the helm of the Enterprise and know that in a few years she is no longer at the helm of the Enterprise you wonder what happens. Is there a tragic end or just simply a career change?

Doing a third watch. I know there are makeup budget constraints but for a UFP, the in universe colonies are too segregated. Its the 23rd century version of a MAGA Party. Apart from Spock, and two Andorians there is nothing diverse about Starfleet or the UFP on screen. It is a homo sapiens only club.

A pretty good episode, although I'm not a fan of a cliffhanger ending for a 10 episode season. The episode definitely breaks the last bit of possibility of having any continuity with TOS though, Chapel and Spock have seen an adult Gorn, which 100% never happened in the universe where the events of Arena took place. Of course these aliens aren't really gorn anyway, they're reptilian xenomorphs, but if the show wants to continue to pretend that they're gorn then this show is definitely not a prequel to Prime timeline TOS, although itsa really never been that regardless of what they've said before.
I don't recall Majel Barrett standing on the bridge and watching Kirk's fight with the Gorn in "Arena." Did she even appear in the sickbay scene with the Cestus III survivor?

Uhura wasn't on the bridge when Spock, Chapel and T'Pring staged their little show for the viewscreens and Chapel wasn't on the bridge at any point during "Arena(TOS)." She may not even appear in the entire episode.

You noticed that too, huh?

These particular colonists may simply have wanted to go off world to establish a "humans-only" club where no alien was likely to be seen. And the choice of their architecture seems to embody that retro element.

Say hello to the Maquis

Mmm...some new colonists, perhaps?

Its worth noting that this episode takes place only around 99 years after the formation of the Federation, and Andorians, Telarites and Vulcans (with Earth) were the first founding members. We don't really know exactly how many planets are in the Federation right now, so its not really terribly surprising that by 2260 that the majority of Starfleet would still be humans with a smaller mix of other non-human species.

Starfleet was notably more diverse 100 years later in 2360 when TNG came along though.

And many of those founding races were shown to be pretty xenophobic and still maintained their own fleets so in terms of 'Starfleet' you had Spock as the only Vulcan and then various other races, but the bulk was always humans.

Also this colony was outside of Federation space and originated from human settlers apparently emulating the old mid-west so probably makes even more sense it didn't attract (possibly on purpose) "aliens"

Presumably she promotes and becomes First Officer of another ship, and then maybe later a captain?

That could certainly be... I guess not everyone can be as slow to be promoted away from piloting the Enterprise as Sulu.

If I had to grade the episode, which I don't really do the numbers anymore, but if I did, it would be an 11. Of course, I'm taking one point away because it's a cliffhanger. So it would be a 10.

A few points:

* The demarcation line is a political maneuver, not a true to space boundary. In essence, it was "you stay on this side of the line, regardless of where it goes, or we'll consider it an act of war." Remember, they informed Starfleet about it first, who informed the Enterprise. The Gorn knew exactly what they were doing.

* Chapel and Spock leave the bridge before the saucer enters the atmosphere, so there isn't much gravity to counter. The rockets are doing the work of propelling and guiding the saucer down.

* SCOTTY! I was completely caught by surprise. What a welcome, welcome surprise! I also love that Pelia considers him one of her best students while having some of the worst grades. She likes it when people think outside of the box, she just wants them to follow it up with the goods. Scotty probably goes off in a dozen different directions with new ideas, and it frustrates her.

* I don't know where people get the idea you turn your brain off for this, my brain was moving a thousand miles a second trying to make connections, backing it up with canon (as I know it), formulating new plot theories, and extrapolating what might happen to the characters based on the data I had at the time. Yes, some of them have plot armor because of future events, but there are characters I like very much who don't have that plot armor, like La'an, and Ortegas, with La'an my greatest concern because Boimler didn't even acknowledge her like he did so many others in "Those Old Scientists."

So now we have to wait who knows how long for the conclusion of this cliffhanger. I want to say they stuck the landing, but they're still in the air! This was a fantastic episode, though, and this was definitely a fantastic season. If they cancel this, I swear to Gort I will travel to Paramount studios and take a dump in their flower garden.
