So an actual Scots accent then. ;)
She was an instructor at the Academy teaching engineering for like a Century. Makes sense she would know Scott and many others attending the Academy, especially those majoring in engineering.
Well the true small universe issue is the fact that every Starfleet officer in the entire galaxy goes to the one University in San Fransisco.

You noticed that too, huh?

These particular colonists may simply have wanted to go off world to establish a "humans-only" club where no alien was likely to be seen. And the choice of their architecture seems to embody that retro element.

Mmm...some new colonists, perhaps?
Possibly, which is why I'm siding with the Gorn lol The UFP should have a rule, if you want to start racially segregated colonies, don't expect Starfleet to save you when it goes terribly wrong.
Its worth noting that this episode takes place only around 99 years after the formation of the Federation, and Andorians, Telarites and Vulcans (with Earth) were the first founding members. We don't really know exactly how many planets are in the Federation right now, so its not really terribly surprising that by 2260 that the majority of Starfleet would still be humans with a smaller mix of other non-human species.

Starfleet was notably more diverse 100 years later in 2360 when TNG came along though.
TNG on screen was just as alien free on the Enterprise, especially the background crew, apart from Worf and Troi. I put that down to tight makeup budget.
99 years is half a Vulcan life, probably 65 years for a 23rd century human. Not impressed if it takes more than a 100 years for a civilised galactic organisation to get over their biases. That's about three generations.

Is there really 'that many' Starfleet officers though? There's 60,000 crew on the US's 11 aircraft carriers. The Nimitz classes are around 5,500 per. The new Ford class has more automation and is around 4,500. So far only the namesake Gerald R. Ford is active, although the John F Kennedy launches next year. The vast majority of the 'crew' are enlisted and not actually officers and gone through the Naval Academy though.

That's before getting into any other ships or bases. There's 65,000+ active officers in the Navy. The Naval Academy graduates around 1,000 new officers a year. There are other paths to becoming an officer though. So it may be Starfleet also has other paths, but they also probably need A LOT less.

Enterprise in SNW has I think 200+ crew. I would guess a portion did not go to Starfleet academy. Chief O'Brien went engineering school/program to Starfleet.

The Enterprise is the flagship so obviously most other ships probably have smaller crew complements. I think by the Dominion War the Federation had around 600+ ships. If you gave the current era 300 ships*200 crew you get 6,000.

USA population 340 million. UFP population, more likely close to a trillion. Starfleet Academy should be huge.

Yea, but that population counts civilizations that have their own fleets and maintain their bases and worlds and are not necessarily part of Starfleet, but certainly part of the Federation.

There are pretty likely bureaucrats and types who are part of the FEDERATION, but come from going to a normal university and never go through Starfleet Academy. So 'Starfleet' is a much smaller/specialized aspect of the Federation. I think the Federation support staff/administration likely DWARFS Starfleet personnel and of that personnel I don't think a large chunk is even Starfleet Academy graduates anyway.

We never get solid numbers, but using some math and real world numbers (rest of post is a copy and paste from every time this convo comes up)

Memory Alpha lists 350 world's as part of the Federation as stated on screen in 2373.

They list 183 member species with a population of 985 Billion Federation wide, which works out to 5.3 billion of each species. Which seems low considering human demographics, but maybe we just breed more and that's why we're overrepresented in Starfleet.

0.4% of the US population services in all combined military branches recently. I'm using the US because Starfleet is based on the US.

Using HALF that you end up with 1.97 BILLION people in Starfleet.

Half that again and you still have a BILLION people serving in Starfleet.

Since SNW takes place 120 years earlier so cut that in half again and you still have 500 mil people serving. Without taking into consideration the real life surge of service members thanks to wars, and they just had one with the Klingons.

It's all back of the napkin numbers but no matter how liberal or conservative you think they are, Starfleet is huge

Starfleet should be huge. The HQ should be a planet, or take up the whole of California

I always liked the Starfleet HQ starbase in Franz Joseph's technical manual. It was gargantuan, and if I remember it had interior dock spaces enough for a half dozen Constitution class vessels at once. It was also supposed to be the site of Starfleet Academy.

Vulcans have been consistently shown to be extremely bigoted despite their adherence to logic
