Rillik or possibly her successor as there has probably been an election by now and we don't know if she won or even stood for re-election is probably pretty busy on Betazed at the minute setting up the new HQ and can't leave in order to deal with the Klingon refugees.
There's also any number of reasons that the president couldn't make it back to Earth to have attended the meeting with the Betazoids, it's not exactly a time of political stability.
And since the president prior to Rillik gave Vance authority to act as a representitive of the Federation when dealing with the Chain that authority has probably just been kept that as an accomplished diplomat and leader he is qualified to step in and speak on behalf.
He is probably in communication with the council and president off screen to get approval for various things.
Why? It's only been two years since Disco's final season. Granted, we don't know who long a term for Federation President is, but even if it is four years, we only know they are due for an election soon.
Um, we're discussing why she wasn't involved with the talks with Betazed in this discussion, as that's what episode this thread is about. Not the Klingon episode that just aired.
Indeed evidence suggests 3193 and she became president in 3190 but there is conflicting evidence to suggest 3195. While I'm a believer in 3193 it is one of those things we need to hear. But you are right even at 5 years we don't know the term length I was just covering all possibilities.

Finally caught up on the first four. Nothing new here that I haven't seen in many other shows about young people. Surprised how human-centric the cadet corps seems to be given today's makeup and CG effects and the show's budget. I sure wish they could keep Junior from becoming the Mary Sue of this show but they won't, will they?
Alrighty, I just watched the first two episodes. Not nearly as bad as social media made it out to be. I was expecting a mockery of ST, but found it to be a Star Trek show for the YA (Young Adult) audience. Sure, maybe a little bit TOO YA for a lot of Trekkies, but not a mockery of a show by any means. In fact, and this is coming from someone who stays away from YA novels and highschool drama stuff in general, this wasn't bad, in fact it's YA I can actually watch.
That said, I have to say it, my main problem I'm having with this series right now is Nahla Ake. I understand everything having to happen in the academy now to involve these students and fuel the YA tropes in their interpersonal relationships. I'm also OK with those kids being kids, but Nahla Ake walking barefoot, not knowing how to brush her own hair, not knowing how to sit up straight in a chair, and talking like she just got an injection from the dentist really brings down my enjoyment of this show. There needs to be a greater divide between the children and the adults. Nahla Ake acting like an 8 year old is a little off.
They are trying very hard to make her quirky and hip, but it’s not working for me. She just comes across as unprofessional and heavily plot-armored. The other characters are mostly fine, but dang it, Nahla Ake is a huge part of the show and every time she’s on, I feel like telling her to go to her room. To me, she evokes a sort of filial piety; I feel like I need to get this lady out of harm's way because clearly she’s going a little cuckoo. Where the hell are her shoes? Why is she getting inches away from a murderer while giggling in her chair?! She doesn't inspire any sense of command to me at all.

Not sure if you've seen SNW, but Ake is meant to be a Lanthanite, and quite a bit of Hunter's performance seems informed by Carol Kane's.
I agree with you that the character can grate a bit but I think the writers' intent is to imagine what someone who's centuries old would act like; she's basically beyond caring about things at this point. Plus she nominally acts as a bridge between the cadets and the more professional officers like Thok, though that dynamic's yet to be built on.
Do bear in mind that Hunter is hearing impaired which has also reportedly impacted her speech.
I did watch the first season but have yet to catch up with second and third. I like how you frame the character though. It's funny, because I actually like when she's interacting with Thok, there's a chemistry going on there I enjoy.

You'll note she only takes her shoes off when she's off duty. Do you keep your shoes on at all times when you're not at work?
In a high-traffic public area where footwear is regulated, everybody else is using it and not having them on immediately prompts your colleague to ask with a look of concernn where are your shoes? Yes!
Shoes have various degrees of importance depending on the field

Hunter's little piggies look all right to me!... Second episode finally watched, and it was... okay. The extended chat between Caleb and Tarima kind of killed the pacing of the show, which was kind of tenuous anyway. Liked the Boothby sign homage, and the opera performance by the Doctor and female partner. Beautiful sets, although stellar cartography was a bit bare. Seemed like to me the convincing offer to get Betazed to join the Federation could've come sooner, but that's probably how thin the story really was. Can't give this one more than a 7 given the slow pacing in spots and (IMO) lack of chemistry between Caleb and Tarima.
I enjoyed it. Loved Caleb's humor. "Dismissed." "You can't dismiss yourself!!"
He had great chemistry with Tarima, I think they bonded without trying to code it as romance - they became fast friends.
Loved the Doctor's opera!

That seems to be a mistake that’s been made so much it became canon. In TNG, betazoids were full telepaths, much more so than vulcans, and only Deanna (and some other betazoid/human introduced for one episode later), were ‘just’ empaths. But writers who aren’t Trek nerds have conflated Deanna’s unique limitations with the entire species at times. It’s been pretty inconsistent. When introduced, Ferengi’s four lobed brains made them immune to Deanna’s powers, but by DS9, that was no longer true either, as Lwaxana, IIRC, read Quarks brain and said he was a revolting little troll for thinking such thoughts.

But then genetically engineering folk turned out to be super illegal in the Federation anyway, so, episode was just a bit off-theme for Trek, I guess.
