Cool to know. So as an Earth standard, it was probably adapted by Betazed for use in non-verbal, non-telepathic communication.

BSL got legally recognised in the UK as an official language in 2022 (alongside English and Welsh). That status creates a whole lot of legal mandates for accessibility and use, and may grow the language in future years. About 2/3rds of speakers identify it as their first language, the remainder are either hearing users, or deaf users who have other primary means (spoken word, lipreading, auditory amplification etc) they use toutinely.

I don’t get why they are doing sign language. They’re betazoids. They can just read their thoughts.

In the case of his daughter, it was explicitly explained.

In the case of others... perhaps their culture now demands observances of external communication?

Perhaps it's even related to their wall?

Personally, I find the layers interesting, whatever their reasons.
The daughter just said she has it turned down. She should still be able to do so.
Why were they so rude to the Exocomp at the beginning? I don’t want another Peanut Hamper happening.

She called it a "neuro-inhibitor." Inhibitor means something that slows down or stops a chemical reaction altogether. They didn't really spell out what it meant for her abilities, but the way they were talking it sounded like she was handicapped by it. YMMV.

I took it to mean her abilities were heightened and this toned it down.
They kept referring to them as empaths when they are telepaths. Troi was only an empath because she was half human as well.

Yeah, most anti-anxiety medications are called SSRI - or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

i'm enjoying the show so far. Another 8 out of 10. The young characters are better than i expected . Caleb and Tarima actually is very sweet. The show has heart.

The adults are all great too. Really liking seeing Doctor , Jett, and Vance again, and Holly Hunter and Gina Yashere are great.

I'm loving all the easter eggs, name drops , and returning species!

I didn't like this episode quite as much as the pilot, but I respected it a lot more.

Whereas the pilot was trying to play to a lot of traditional trek tropes that have been well-established even in the modern era, here we see something we've not really seen since the Berman Trek era - Space Drama! Kurtzman Trek has really leaned into the action and peril, to the point that sometimes pointless action filler (or something endangering the ship and/or characters) was inserted even into quieter, more character focused episodes. They have the confidence here to jettison any action worse than Caleb getting squirted with mucus.

That's not to say there are stakes - stakes of potential quadrant-wide importance with the rejoining of Betazed to the Federation. I think the "adult" side of the story is handled well enough. Vance gets a real role here, trying with Ake to convince the president of Betazed. Some of the worldbuilding still seems a bit confusing to me still (is this "wall" covering a good-sized chunk of space, since Caleb's mother was on some asteroid there?) but I'm willing to let it slide. I love that at the conclusion they realized that the president wasn't just a reactionary isolationist that they needed to somehow convince, but that there needed to be a give and take - seemed like a very Trekkian conclusion. I also just love the Federation not being HQed on Earth, as I'm sick of the Federation being depicted as "human+friends."

Of course, most of the episode lives and dies on Caleb and Tarima's budding romance. I thought this worked well enough. Nothing was cringe, as the kids say. They acted appropriately immature for the age of their characters, without coming across as children. They wisely didn't go with the "two hot people bang immediately" thing, and kept both palpable attraction and friction throughout the episode. I think some of the questions Caleb asked her seemed kind of weird and for the sake of the audience (I wouldn't point out weird things on a woman I was trying to mack on), but I can forgive this.

I feel like Caleb's arc regressed a bit from the pilot regarding the search for his mother, as he seemed more settled into giving Starfleet a try, and is now immediately looking for an out again. That said, I understand the season has 10 episodes, and we probably won't see him as more than a begrudging cadet until the end.

The other kids are given quite short shrift here, fading into the background as little more than extras. However, there were a lot more slice of life scenes here which gave you a picture of regular life at Starfleet Academy. They really didn't serve a story purpose here, and I hear later in the season most or all will be given a focus episode, so it's fine.

Got a better feeling for Ake here than in the pilot. Seems like they're making her a bit of a weirdo. Maybe not Pelia level, but I guess half Lanthanites are just half weirdos?

So yeah, this episode didn't hit for me personally, but I hope we have more slow-paced, drama-fueled episodes without resorting to cheap action and peril.

When did they do that? I'm pretty sure we see it inhabited in 'Will you take my hand?" and it's definitely depicted as inhabited in 'Coming Home'.
IIRC, the United Earth flag (or was it the EDF insignia?) in S3 of Disco includes representations of both Earth and the Moon. This got updated in S4 to include a representation of Titan, which is proof enough to me Luna is indeed inhabited in the 32nd century.
So this will be the first time in Federation history the seat of government won't be on Earth.
Well, in Disco, the Federation's seat of government was at Federation HQ, a sort of starship/mobile space station. Though not canon, and probably never will be, the information for Mike Sussman's President Archer series has the Federation's seat of government in the 22nd century being aboard a neutral space station.

Not as good as the first but the move of the Federation seat to Betazed was interesting. I’m going to hate the Betazoid roommate. While I generally liked the diplomatic plot, the story between Caleb and Tarima left a lot to be desired. 6/10.

It was a bit weird that Tarima's brother went from a non-entity to being "go get em sis!" to being annoying as hell, all in the span of a single episode.

The Betazed leader is deaf?

The actor playing President Sadal is deaf iirc

I noticed on rewatch that Ake mentioned a number of systems joined Betazed behind their shield.

I'm betting Tarima's sister will show up later in the season, despite going to the War College.

Their Psionic Shield seemed to be "System Wide" & have Allied Systems participating behind their shield.

Kind of like the Trynar Shield we saw in Lower Decks.

A ridiculously large Shield that protected entire Star Systems.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was a network of these Shields between all participating Star Systems.
