Giving this one a 7. I usually cringe at teen romance, but I found the budding relationship between Tarima and Caleb pretty sweet. Tarima is quite a likeable character and I get hints of Tam Elbrun in why she needs to wear the dampener. Also the decision to make Betazed the federation capital was really cool. I think it makes a lot of sense post-burn to decentralise the Federation as much as possible. Having Starfleet academy located on Earth, the seat of government on Betazed and Starfleet Headquarters in space means no one planet can truly be prominent. Also, I think the Federation being so earth-centric was part of the reason things were starting to fall apart pre-burn

Overall a fun episode and the humour is hitting just right for me. Bonus points for the Doctor getting to sing opera.

Having just taken a 16 week class over the span of four over the semester break, I can't tell for sure, but I think the president was using American Sign Language. Not that I really need an explanation for why a Betazoid would use an Earth sign language, I can imagine sign language on Betazed would be uniquely unnecessary (given telepathic communication on top of audio for most who for whatever reason can't) I can imagine a kind of sign equivalent of Federation Standard (which is similarly based on English) may have been adapted as, well, a Federation standard.

Can anyone help me on the war college. I mean, I sort of know what a war college night be IRL, but any idea where it fits in here? Is it a hangover of the United Earth military, or did they get absorbed into Starfleet when Adira joined the crew permanently. Is it some sort of MACOs hangover, I thought - but then remembered that the MACOs were merged into SF prior to Beyond which is still the Prime timeline at that stage. Also, everything seems to happen a bit fast - I mean, Betazed does a u-turn and within a few days they are all joining the academy again. Ake decides to come back to Starfleet after 10 or 15 years and she's all bedded in and ready as Chancellor within 24 hours......

A deaf friend who works internationally explained that already, certain industries standardise on ASL or BSL and most people working in those sectors become bilingual. It makes sense that we would end up with a standard SL on Earth at some point, probably long before the formation of Starfleet and the Fed.

I need to think about my feelings on the first two episodes... but I will say I REALLY hate the slang in this. It's like they took the dialogue that I hated from Discovery and just amped it up to 11. Why would people a thousand years from now even know what an unpaid dating coach is?

Given that they mention warships explicitly, it's possible they split ships into pure warships and science ships. Which makes more sense than sending ships full of children and families into battle I suppose.

I liked the first episode enough that I decided, "the Hell with it" and put on the second. I liked the second episode even better. I give it a 9.

I'll be upfront with you. SFA wasn't my first choice for a new Star Trek series. It wasn't my second choice. It actually wasn't any choice of mine. But I really like what they're giving us.

The absolute worst thing I can say about SFA is that sometimes it feels more like high school than college. If that's the worst I can say, this series is pretty good.

I'm glad they didn't go the way I thought they were going to go with Betazed. I thought they'd make Betazed a parallel of MAGA. They have a wall, but that's where the similarity ends. They have demands, it looks like they might fall apart, but then things are diplomatically worked out by the end. Different arguments and points-of-view are presented.

And I think Caleb and the Batezoid President's Daughter had a good chemistry and the argument that later broke out between them felt believable. Glad they were able to make up before the end. Interesting twist that she ends up in the War College.

Sometimes, the dialogue feels Generation Z, but I'm not going to pretend I care about that. Especially since I figured that was the way it was going to be anyway. You could say it's being translated from however they speak in the 32nd Century, if you really wanted to.

Cool to know. So as an Earth standard, it was probably adapted by Betazed for use in non-verbal, non-telepathic communication.

War college attire reminded me of S31 (again) :/
Yeah why would she go there? She didn't have any war vibes :D
The love triangle seems to be both Genesis and Tamira wanting Caleb. Maybe Genesis instead ends up with the blue guy :D
It would be something really fresh if they gave us Trek's first poly relationship that we actually see and follow along.
