The swearing is so out of place it makes me cringe. Another thing on these shows that's done purely for shock value. At least Picard owns its decision and persists. Discovery gave us one F word scene and then neeever again. must have needed headlines in those early days.

Patrick Stewart was totally against it on Picard, but Chabon convinced him it was necessary. For.. some... reason...

This particular branch of the Star Trek franchise is not aimed at young children.

The original series was considered very adult and risque in it's time. I'm old enough to remember when my mom didn't want me to watch Star Trek even though she was a huge fan. A lot of people confuse Gene Roddenberry with Walt Disney. Gene Roddenberry had no interest in creating family friendly fun for the whole family. He wanted to do a science fiction show that pushed the borders and boundaries of standards and practices. Believe me, I think what we're seeing on CBS all access right now is tame compared to what Gene Roddenberry would have come up with if he had had the same creative freedoms. It would certainly have a lot more sex. Gene was nothing if not obsessed with sex.

I think what we're seeing on CBS all access right now is tame compared to what Gene Roddenberry would have come up with if he had had the same creative freedoms. It would certainly have a lot more sex. Gene was nothing if not obsessed with sex.

But it was always accessible to children.

It really wasn't. The usage was very natural.

It was in Trek, and the usage couldn't have been any LESS natural in Discovery.

It's as juvenile as the writing.

The only problem I have with the swearing is that it may lead parents to not let their kids (especially really young kids) watch Star Trek. I have a similar issue with things like Icheb graphically being tortured, except that in that case I agree with the parents. Rather the reason is legit or silly though, it's a shame, because kids should be able to watch Star Trek.

Picard is geared towards people who grew up watching TNG. Everyone's older now. We're older, Patrick Stewart's older. If you can't handle "fuck", that's on you.

I don't have kids, so it's not my problem. My brother has a daughter. He'll be showing her Star Trek: Prodigy. He's thinking about showing her Star Trek: Lower Decks but wants to see it first before deciding.

He's told me he doesn't plan to show her Discovery or Picard until she's 11. She just turned seven.

One of the things you have to understand about these shows is that each one is intended for a different audience. A different niche within the fandom.

My niece probably wouldn't like DS9 until she's older either. DS9 premiered when I was 13 and the Bajoran stuff bored the Hell out of me. I stopped watching the series after a few episodes and didn't bother watching it again until TNG ended. Because I still needed the Star Trek fix. Eventually I did watch the first two seasons, when they stripped the series into nightly reruns four years later. And I ended up getting more out of the early DS9 episodes at 17 than I ever would've at 13.

So there can be other reasons that Star Trek series wouldn't necessarily appeal to younger children.

Yeah, and the moderator's questions were mostly fairly superficial, I felt. He didn't give the impression that he'd paid much attention to the show, so inevitably failed to really dig into it (case in point describing Rios as a 'space cowboy', which Cabrera clearly disagreed with - as would anyone who actually paid attention to the character beyond his first scene).

I said the same when I heard that! Did that guy even watch the show?!

Not much to the panel at all. Sirtis amused me, though, shouting down anyone who sucked up to Stewart! The generational gap really showed itself there, with a fairly glaring gulf between the TNG cast who've known him for 30-odd years and the new Picard cast who are still slightly in awe of this living legend!

Also interesting: When she said she was glad she didn't have to wear her catsuit again (she called it space suit), Jeri raising her hands and clapping.

The turbolift funhouse?

Georgiou eating Kelpians and slicing her officers heads apart?

Storylines of two separate shows that start out interesting but then devolve into mindless cliched action about AI taking over the galaxy?
