Doesn't work that way.
For what it's worth, I know someone who had a prophetic dream in real life and was telling it to a lot of people. And it came true, sort of. :(

So yes, from my own real life experience (not based on a weekly science fiction show), it does work that way.

People can change in 3 years and Pike's issue was with losing people. You seriously think he would be able to walk away from Starfleet knowing that if he does a heap of cadets are going to die?
Pike is definitely a man who sees taking this onto his shoulders as his duty (and perhaps that attempting to shirk it would be a violation of the agreement he made here).

They seem to continue to foreshadow Saru as the next Captain.
I hope so. I think he'll be a great one.

That would keep Michael free to go running around on missions, too, which seems to be the show's formula.

Wow. I was glued to the show.
So cool with the ties to Lorells son, the monastery was like Shaolin monk mythology, Michael and Spock teaming up, and the Menagerie episode!

Now they have to blow up Discovery and board the Enterprise fighting over 30 ships!

A few rando thoughts:

Sure would be handy if those phasers could shoot a beam.

Did Pike hear the whole conversation with L'Oreal (she has hair now...) and Tyler in English?

Discovery is starting to turn into a bigger fantasy series than Game of Thrones...

For a second, I thought Number One was sitting in a chair with no console.

Honestly, no shit. I frigging hate pew pew phasers.

Just to prove I can say something negative about Discovery, I wish they'd remember that phasers can vaporize people.

“That nano zombie Control thing might have stood up against hand lasers, but we could transport the ship’s power against it, enough to blast half a continent.” Another Tyler from another time.

The only element of this episode that was a little off for me is this whole concept of time crystals. Trek has certainly used some magical crapola to drive plot needs through the years...but this is right up there for sure.

Didn't affect my enjoyment...just an honest observation.

I don't like time crystals either. Although to be fair, they will stop being a macguffin in about 10 years' time in-universe once any warp capable starship has the power to time travel via slingshot effect. And Star Trek in 50 years has never given a satisfactory answer on why so and so doesn't just time travel to prevent whatever.

This and that other Star francise's new reliance on magical crystals is worrisome. I shook my head when Rogue One revealed that the Death Star is powered by magical Force using crystals.

Motti
: Any attack made by the Rebels against this station would be a useless gesture, no matter what technical data they've obtained. This station is now the ultimate power in the universe! I suggest we use it.

Vader
: Don't be too proud of this technological terror you've constructed. The only reason it works is because of magical crystals that use the Force.

Motti: Lord Vader, your devotion to that ancient religion... is just what the Empire needs. I regret speaking on things I know nothing about.

I'm not sure its any crazier than the Talosians being able to broadcast real time illusions across light years of space. Honestly, if they can do that a good chunk of the crapola in Trek can be explained by Talosians just entertaining themselves..

I must admit though, I've often wondered...how does distance/range factor into a concept like telepathy?

Got to the end. Didn't see that twist coming the way it did.

I think this episode is the best one since "If Memory Serves" but doesn't quite match it, even though it has a lot of suspense and Boreth was a treat. I'm calling it a 9.

This was a great episode for Pike. And for L'Rell and Tyler, the former of whom now accepts and sees Tyler as Tyler instead of Voq.
