The impression was that Chakotay's folk hailed from the Central region.

I mean the Chakotay problems are a whole topic on their own.

I could be mistaken but I thought it was only the native tribes of North America that got labelled as Indians.

I seem to remember jungle in one of his flashbacks. Later, he remarked to Tuvok that his tribe never used the bow. Also, I remember him talking about the Gulf of Mexico and..."digs". Taking all of that into account, it seems reasonable to conclude that his bloodline is fairly southern.

I think that Chakotay makes sense if he's looked at as a realistic depiction of a 24th Century person. As someone reaching for ancestral identity as an adult, his "traditions" probably wouldn't make any sort of coherent historical sense.

I remember the episode "Counterpoint", where all of the psionic-capable crewmembers had to be hidden in the transporter buffer while the ship was inspected. We see three such crew being hidden. Janeway lies about the continued existence of Vulcans Tuvok, Vorik and the Betazoid, Jurot.

In the later episode, "Repression", a female Vulcan can be seen among the Voyager crew. Perhaps she is a (non-psionic?) Rigelian of Rigel V, whom have compatible blood with Vulcans ("Journey to Babel")?
