But even in these episodes - where "Federation" and "Starfleet" synonymous? In my vague memories of TOS, I recall Earth being part of the Federation (multiple species joining together), but "Starfleet" as a distinct Earth organization - I always assumed the other Federation members had their own spacecraft organizations. At least in TOS - in TNG/DS9 that changed obviously.
"Starfleet" and the "Federation" arrive on the scene relatively late in Season One. IIRC, Starfleet is first mentioned in The Menagerie, while the Federation dates to Arena. From what I can tell Errand of Mercy is the first time Kirk identifies himself as "Captain James T. Kirk of the starship Enterprise, representing the United Federation of Planets".

Yup, we know who was really in the driver's seat....

No.
Ah, this old chestnut. The 1939 Wizard of Oz that everyone most identifies with was the eighth film adaptation of L. Frank Baum's book in less than forty years since it was published, so the idea that remakes are some new Hollywood trend is bullshit. If anything they did it more in the past.
I recently found out that The Maltese Falcon, starring Humphrey Bogart, was actually the third movie based on the novel.

That's basically the problem. Positive responses to the content are encouraged and praised. But negative ones are somehow not fair or diminish the discussion? Why would agreement with consensus be the prerequisite for a constructive relationship? Sounds like a compliance mandate. Also, I did not call any particular person stupid. And I didn't say my opinions are objective. Text wall? Am I the only one who isn't intimidated by reading a small amount of text?

I read all of your critique, and you could have said "I thought it was shit" a lot quicker
There are two bullet points I did agree with and even alluded to several pages ago.
I don't understand why Spock has to go to Talos IV of all places
I also thought the whole reveal of Burnham being a bastard as a kid to Spock was overplayed, but I'm not going to go over it all again, many people disagreed, I accept that.

I mean, Marty Feldman sure knew how he looked, but damn, if I were him, I'd develop Liam Neeson's particular set of skills and hunt that bastard down that made this poster.

How long do we have to keep dancing around The Elephant in the Room?

I never claimed to be reasonable. I don't recall seeing a character limit when I posted. "People generally" is literally a conformity statement. I read 50 pages of responses and never felt the need to tell someone it's unwise to share their opinion, regardless of how many characters it is or if it was positive or negative. And also... does the fact that it's my first post have any relevance at all to its content? Lost of odd bias going on here.

This is truly cringe-inducing.

Burnham - this Mary Sue character has ONE facial expression. Sadness, love, anger, amazement, humor, horniness, confusion - all just the one face.

It's funny how this is the exact same complaint the dudebros all throw at Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, isn't it? She doesn't smile enough, she's too wooden, she doesn't show any emotions! Why is she in a real uniform instead of a sexy catsuit?

Oh, you know, yeah, the forest thing also didn’t work for me. Maybe Vulcan gets its oxygen from desert-dwelling microorganisms or something. But it had too much ocean and maybe cloud-cover and Canadian forest for me. At the very least, don’t call it the forest of “Vulcans Forge.”

Also, did I miss-see something, or was there a moon around Vulcan’s sister-planet in Burnham’s memory but no moon in Spock’s? Is this s subtle nod to problems with memory or my own misrememberence? I’ll watch the episode again mater and figure it out.

Kudos also to an episode than I’ve already watched a couple times and want to again. I usually haven’t felt that with this series, and I do like it.
Rashomon confirmed?

18:57 – Spock remembers Burnham running away, and there's what's likely Vulcan's sister planet T'Khut in the night sky.
45:07 – Burnham remembers roughly the same moment and there's both T'Khut and its moon.

Is this a nod to works like Rashomon that are about the differences in memory?

DSC has been cute with homages to other work:
  1. The Ba'ul (which look slightly reminiscent of Doug Jones in Pan's Labyrinth) are reminiscent of the Goa'uld, with their similar names, slave-y nature, obelisk tech, and Anubis command ship.
  2. The mecha-squid probe that attacked Pike's shuttle is reminiscent of the sentinels in The Matrix.
  3. The three-point AI that's invaded Airiam is reminiscent of the evil AI Brainiac.

I also read some posts on the ST subreddit that were claiming SMG was both too wooden in her acting and over-emoting all the time. Michael is too smug and unlike-able a character, while also being too perfect and too heroic.:guffaw:

I love that when discussing the Angel's future origins, Peck's Spock says "the engineering comprehension necessary to..." exactly like Quinto's in ST'09 when discussing the future tech the Romulans used to destroy Vulcan.
I love Nimoy as the quintessential Spock. In my heart, he will always be *the* Spock.
Quinto did a terrific job carrying that torch, and I loved exploring a Spock with a better tie to his emotional side.

Now we have Peck, who seems to embody both concepts, to some degree, but definitely playing the cooler, more logical Vulcan we've grown accustomed to from the original series. So far, he's been more than capable, and I'm eager to see more of his work going forward.
