i agree with pretty much everything you said in your original post but to be fair, we haven’t seen the Klingons talking yet. That, I think, will be the true test of dialogue clunkiness.
True, but I also like the move away from perhaps more Berman era over-written human dialogue, toward a more naturalistic style. It seems more up to date but is also closer to the way people spoke in TOS.

Have we talked about the Hiawatha's registry number? Saru realizes its a medical ship simply from its registry number alone.
More likely he recognizes the prominently displayed caduceus/asklepian pennant just above it...

...which, I can't help but notice, looks quite like a big red angel from a distance! Coincidence? We'll see.:vulcan:

I wonder if the creature conjured up by young Spock on his holographic etch-a-sketch was the dragon he told Leila Kalomi he'd once seen on Berengaria VII in "This Side Of Paradise" (TOS)?

Ah, I see what you mean. Now that we’re several decades departed from that, it is a shock to go back and see those older productions and how mind-bendingly ponderous some of that dialogue was. Then again I don’t think any writer in Hollywood knew how to build such naturalistic on-screen interactions until a West Wing came along, so I can’t completely blame Berman for that, though I’d like too... :D

I find it curious that only Jet Reno stayed aboard to tend to the injured. Or that she was the only capable crewman available. Since the Hiawatha is a medcal ship there should have been a surplus of willing hands available to stay behind.

And investigating the Red Burst did bring Discovery to the ship. There is something suspicious about the whole operation. Someone or something wanted that ship found.

Probably Section 31 or Spock had something to do with it.

That Engineer may be more than she appears.

Obviously, all those who escaped then perished horribly, because Starfleet never found out about the crash. I doubt Reno voluntarily stayed behind to tend to the injured - more probably, lots of people tried to escape, and those who succeeded got killed for their troubles, but so did most of those who failed. Reno merely happened to be one of those not immediately killed. Perhaps at some later point, she decided trying to escape in a second wave would not be worth the hassle, because the survival odds were better in the wreck, which in practice made her "stay with the wounded".

Doesn't mean she wouldn't be a Section 47 agent or a Secret Angel or internally Klingon or whatever. Her cover story just doesn't need to look immediately suspicious, is all.

They still failed to tell Starfleet. Else Pike would have known the ship was destroyed on this particular asteroid.

Absolutely, if I just wanted angst and the same issues repeated over and over again I would watch daytime soapy television, I don't know how anyone can watch that stuff without their brains dying.

Its meant to be escapist entertainment with a side order of pew pew.

Agreed. I have a feeling that the heavy action and fx in this episode was just due to its premier status, which is completely fine. I'd be willing to bet things settle down in the coming weeks, and appropriately so.

Definitely, a lot was riding on this episode and they had to go for it as CBS is watching very closely to see the response.

The following episodes wont be as visibly expensive which is pretty normal for TV shows.

I consider the episode and Pikes introduction to be a success, if the season continues like this the chances of an eventual Pike spinoff will be very strong indeed.

It has more potential than the MU Georgiou series does plus there could be some serious money made from merchandising and new models of the Enterprise, Discovery is the perfect lead in platform for it.

I like the MU Georgiou character and S31 but I think she and S31 would be better used sparingly rather than having a series built around them to keep the mystery of S31 alive.

...If the ship was fatally hit by Klingons in open space and largely abandoned there, and then got pulled in by the gravity anomalies of this rock, then there might be this confusion. "Thought to be destroyed by the Klingons 10 months ago" is what the records say. "Shot down" is what Pike says, and Reno doesn't contest that. If the ship was "down" where she is down when found, then no survivors ever told that tale, and the shuttles that departed where all intercepted by the Klingons or something.

The only way that that spinoff would be a good idea if all MU and S31 stuff was contained in their entirety in that show instead of contaminating the other shows.

Which is very unlikely, we already know that are going to be seeing Georgiou again in Discovery which means we will probably be seeing S31 as well even if it's only to setup the spinoff.
