So how much does having a nice body impact female starfleet personnel?

Re: So how much does having a nice body impact female starfleet person

Unless I'm missing something entirely, the only thing that would suggest that NuUhura 'slept her way to the top' would be the scene in ST09 where she demanded that Spock assign her to the Enterprise. That would suggest some type of relationship influence was being used to get her where she wanted to go. However, it should be pointed out that it was that same relationship influence that made him assign her elsewhere in the first place, so I think it's an oversimplification to say that she slept her way to the top.

Re: So how much does having a nice body impact female starfleet person

In early TOS episodes there were some (two?) women wearing pants with something what looked like the standard female uniform tucked into them. One woman was zapped by Charlie X, the second one was in other episode, just walking by in the corridor.

Once they heard about grab-ass Charlie getting god like powers, all the women on board were probably scrambling to find pants.

Re: So how much does having a nice body impact female starfleet person

The impression I got from the scene in ST Eleven was that Uhura was using her relationship with Spock to get what she wanted.

Otherwise she would have gone to the first officer of the ship she was assigned to and asked that person for the transfer.

Presumably Uhura wasn't also having sex with that person, and so didn't go that route.

:)

Since Spock seemed to be in charge of the assignment of cadets. He seemed like the logical person to go to.

You also have Number One (Majel Barret) from "The Cage"/"The Menagerie".

Plus it is a movie. The scene exists to establish the Spock/Uhura relationship.

It's clear that Spock changed Uhura's assignment and all Uhura did was remind him she had earned her spot on the Enterprise and denying her that was wrong no matter why he did it.

That was how I read it. Uhura didn't get the spot through her relationship with Spock. She almost didn't get it to avoid such appearances.

:bolian:

Exactamundo.

Her conversation and her subsequent actions showed that her relationship with Spock was hindering her career and that Spock needed to correct the injustice he was erroneously perpetrating.

Re: So how much does having a nice body impact female starfleet person

So, any cadet (meaning no personal relationship with Spock) could have approached Spock in the shuttle bay and obtained a reassignment?

Of course not, Uhura got moved by talking to her lover.

:)

Re: So how much does having a nice body impact female starfleet person

^ That's right. Else Cadet Kirk would have gone to Pointy Eared Bastard for an assignment, instead of being smuggled aboard by McCoy.

Kirk just got done being dressed down by the PEB in a hearing prior to the emergency. I highly doubt he thought talking to him one on one would yield good results, after being told he was on academic suspension.

Or, Kirk would have been assigned to any ship but the Enterprise and had to save that ship. Crud, I just got a fan fiction idea  ;)

Depends on their background. Was said cadet assigned to the Enterprise based on their skill and performance only to be denied that posting?

Cadet Kirk wasn't assigned to the Enterprise or any ship. He was on academic suspension. Going to Spock wouldn't work in that case.

What's even crazier is that in the mirror universe, the women wear even less clothes. They show the navel.

But if you imply that's how they get ahead, this is what happens;

MARLENA: I want one thing, Captain. Transfer me. On the Enterprise, I am humiliated! On another ship, I can hunt fresh game. I've got my rank, and. Don't I? I've been a captain's woman, and I like it. I'll be one again if I have to go through every officer in the fleet.

KIRK: You could.

(She slaps the hell out of him and draws blood)

Kirk: (Dazed) #@#&&!! I simply meant that you could be anything you want to be.
Ok, all of that didn't happen, she almost slapped him.

The one thing I like about NuTrek is that it went ahead and made fun of this.

There is a scene where Kirk is walking with Spock or someone and some women in the Starfleet dress suits, with the short form fitting skirts, walks by.

Kirk goes ahead and turns around and checks them out, obviously.

It's like on the shows they go through all the trouble to put them in these skin tight outfits, and then the male characters don't notice or look at all.

Yeah, right.

If we can believe the stories, they only got away with that by distracting the on-set censor. Someone would take the censor to an early lunch, Nichelle lowered the belt, and they'd shoot it. Even Barbara Eden wasn't allowed to show her navel on NBC, and I Dream of Jeannie was a top rated show at the same time, but they slipped it in there once or twice.

^ "On set censor", seriously? I know there's censors somewhere in the higher levels of the company, but someone literally there watching everything?

How did all those panty shots slip through?

In Enemy Within, the attempted rape scene between Kirk and Rand was much more graphic than was seen. There are still photos of that scene where Kirk has Rand on the ground and is straddling her between her legs.

So they must have filmed it.

I can't remember if it actually aired, or if it was left out. My guess is that it was left out.

Re: So how much does having a nice body impact female starfleet person

Men can be bald, fat, ugly, etc. and still get work and a gorgeous female costar. Women on the other hand...

Some not-quite-10 actresses that have been or are successful.

Rosanne Barr (obviously the pinnacle, back in the 90s she owned TV)
Kathy Bates
Kathy Najimy
Lena Dunham
Melissa McCarthy (soon to be a Ghostbuster)

And old actresses have done well of late. There's a whole genre that opened up for them after Something's Gotta Give. After all, the population as a whole is getting older.

Re: So how much does having a nice body impact female starfleet person

Yeah, but there tend to be a very small list of less than attractive successful female actresses who get pretty much all the roles made for the body type.

Need a fat woman in a comedy? Melissa McCarthy gets the part.

When a woman in a movie has to choose between an ugly, nice male and a good looking asshole, it's her virtuous female duty to overcome her shallowness and go with the nice guy. A male has to choose between an ugly, nice female and a hot mean girl? Well, at least him and the nice girl will always be good friends.

Have you ever seen the anime Paprika? Hot girl ends up with the 500 pound guy who can barely fit in the elevator. Imagine that ever happening with the genders reversed.

Unless he was Spock's lover, then it would work.

Like it did with Uhura.

Re: So how much does having a nice body impact female starfleet person

I've long preferred Hoshi over T'Pol. Yeah, we all have different tastes, but I considered her just more attractive.

Also, I think Hoshi was the first person, or at least the first woman, to score on the NX-01, so I applaud her sexual empowerment.

Hoshi was my fave too. T'pol just seemed too artificial, or maybe it's just because she never smiled.

I rather liked T'pol's pouty lips. :)
