All TV shows and movies have scenes and plot points that aren't absolutely essential, yet people only complain about sex not being necessary. Why is that?

Usually because they're the most obvious.
We are damned if we do and damned if we don't. If they include sex scenes then they're only put them in for us "fanboys" who can't get a real woman.
If we ask them not to then we're all repressed according to judgemental types who think they're better than others and have the right to tell them how to live.
Anyone, except for science fiction fans....In short, I guess SyFy is run by pansies who are afraid of offending anyone.
I would say this arguements premise is wrong its not about sex but about rape. In a SF writers way someone thought it might be cool to have sex even though our people were cut off. Then the backlash came and IMHO the case was made that you were also seeing sex without consent, rape.
I voted average.
What always strikes me as odd is how humans have advanced technology to create starships etc from the Stargate but no advances to cure cancer or other injuries.
Seriously over a decade of advanced tech and still no cure for cancer or regrowing organs and limbs cheaply/quickly.
To be fair, BSG did the same thing. How many times did they show hetero sex, just barely staying out of graphic territory? But when we had the Cain/Gina thing, and the many Eights, the most they'd show was a chaste kiss.

Well, to be fair, they claimed that they wanted to go farther with Cain and Gina, since they had the unrated DVD to play with. The trouble was, all the Cain scenes in Razor were flashbacks from Shaw's perspective, and it just seemed a little odd that Shaw would've had the chance to see her C.O. getting it on.
Well I would never let a male gay crewmember swap with my body. Thats all I need when i return to it, to have shaved testicles, a very sore ass and a weird salty taste in my mouth! lol
On the other hand 13 on broadcast TV FOX's House did go there with one of her lovers
Not a bad episode, but definitely a step down from last week. The abrupt resolution of the Lost Trio storyline definitely robs this episode of some drama.
They finally answer how everyone has managed basic grooming (they all have electric razors...which I assume will never see their batteries empty or their blades go dull, but, whatever).
I really don't get the controversy angle here. Did Wray use the woman's body in a previous episode to have sex with her partner? Was that made clear? If so how come no uproar over that? So it is okay for a lesbian to use another woman's body to have lesbian sex (considering the host may or may not have been gay) but not okay for a straight woman to use a lesbian woman's body for hetero sex..
I think the sex should stay outta Stargate

Yep...apparently so.
According to Joseph Mallozzi there were only minor changes in this episode.

That's going to be tough when the Stargate itself looks like a huge gaping vagina!![]()
