Discovery Renewed for Season 5

....So, Was Stacy Abrams playing the President of Earth, or was she playing The EARTH? (she's large enough - That's why some call her "Stacy Ass-hams") Kurtzman does NOTHING but RUIN TV franchises. F- him!

I really hope season 5 is a step up from S4. I recall when Kurtzman's plan for Trekkake was laid out years ago and I said we'd get a couple of good years before it became content made purely to fulfill a contractural obligation, but I fear Disco is already there.

Michael is captain of the U.S.S. Discovery. She found happiness with a partner after a difficult upbringing.

Saru learned to shoot darts out of his head, liberated his people and got to see what they evolved into 900 years later.

Tilly found what she wanted, and left for Starfleet Academy.

Paul and Hugh adopted Adira and live happily ever after.

Really what else is there for them?

Whatever 10-c built the hyperfield to protect themselves from destroys them, and then we find out what happens next.

1.Motherhood. Fleet captain, commodore or admiralty. Have her command relieved by Nhan,
as hinted in Rubicon
. Teach at the Ni’Var Science Institute. Lead a Ni’Var Expedition Group, after being denied being a part of the Vulcan Expedition Group. Follow in her mother’s footsteps and join Qowat Milat. The possibilities are endless.

2. T’Rina and a return to Pahvo.

3. Turn her students into mini-Tillys and send them off to Discovery and the rest of the Federation.

4. Send Adira off to college. Or divorce/separate. Or the relationship becomes fluid because free love should still exist in the 32nd century.

I was sort of wondering this even at the end of last season. Because once Burnham became captain I knew that was a time clock on the series. It's like when Tony and Angela got together on Who's the Boss?, in that case the romantic tension was over and the writing was on the wall. With Burnham ascending to the captaincy, Season 4 did logically put her through a crucible that tested her captain skills. But now, where else is there to go with her? And I think they shot themselves in the foot, creatively speaking, by giving rebuilding the Federation short shrift. I wish that Season 4 instead had been a bit more episodic in nature as Discovery helps rebuild the Federation, and then Season 5 could've been about Species 10-C, and I think the stakes would be even greater for the audience because we would better know what stood to be lost after a season of watching the Discovery crew painstakingly help put the Federation back together again.

This has been a recurring issue with Discovery. In the first season they created a war with the Klingons and then mostly used it as a backdrop, and for the last two seasons they've used the broken Federation as a backdrop, and I think in both cases they've left some potential juicy storylines and character developing moments on the shelf.

I don't think that's strange. It's definitely the conclusion of a chapter but it doesn't have to be the end of her story. Especially as Star Trek is pretty much all about what people do after they become captain.

Personally I'd been waiting for Star Trek: Burnham and Star Trek: Discovery to combine into one series for a long while and I'm glad it's finally happened.

I must be strange. Not once have I ever considered Burnham achieving captaincy as a reason the show should end.

Why I tie DISCO's ending with Burnham becoming captain is because from the very beginning becoming captain has been the goal, and she achieved it last season. And with this series based very much around Burnham and her journey, her achieving the captaincy represents self-actualization, her attaining her highest self in a sense, her meeting her goal, so therefore, her story (not necessarily the character's life) ends.

Obviously there has been more life to the series after she became captain (though I feel that both the third and fourth season finales both worked for series finales), but at the same time, with the series so much about Burnham's journey, there's little personal left to go with the character, outside of marriage, having kids, raising a family. Granted, the series can evolve (and it has been doing so fitfully) into an ensemble series and that might give it more life for a for more seasons, but that remains to be seen-by me-if they are going to transform DISCO into an ensemble show that is anchored by Burnham (like how Picard, Sisko, Janeway, Archer, and to a lesser extent Kirk anchored their respective shows) or if it will still largely be about Burnham's journey.

I could see them doing something to strip the captaincy from Burnham, to start her back at one again, to attempt to go back to Burnham as a junior officer (or I imagine an outsider more so now) concept, but that could lead again to her going back up the ladder to become captain again.

The closed nature of DISCO's character arc for Burnham has limited the storytelling IMO. With the other series the lead characters were more open ended. Most started their series as captains, and while Sisko didn't, he wasn't desiring being a captain. He did have more of an initial character arc than the (pre-Burnham) others did. But its endpoint was not as explicit, and eventually when he came into his full destiny, it's not coincidental that it was in the series finale, when he ascended and joined the Prophets.

please no. This story has been told. They are an old ship into a mostly unexplored new era, pick a few good ideas and explore them. By now I’m all for a more episodic fifth season, given how badly heavy serialisation has been handled in the past few years.

Give her a decent hero's death, Everyone wins.

You can never say never, but I don't see them killing Burnham off. It certainly wouldn't be a win for all the Burnham fans or Sonequa Martin-Green if that precludes her involvement in future Trek projects. Kirk's death in Generations has been a large creative stumbling block that they haven't figured out a good way to get around.

In a real-world sense it's not a good look to kill off the first Black female lead of a Trek series at the end of its run, and it echoes too closely to what was planned with Sisko on DS9 and even the sort of death that we actually did get for him in the DS9 series finale.

And I think Burnham's death would be too downbeat for a series that trumpets hope. I can see her losing a lot of friends and loved ones perhaps, or Discovery is lost in space at the end, but that's about as tragic as I see them going. The eventual DISCO series finale could just wind up being a day-in-the life sort of like how TNG's was and TOS's unintended finale turned out, instead of being tied to major galactic changes like the end of the Dominion War, a decisive defeat of the Borg, or teases of the birth of the Federation. Granted, Picard's actions in "All Good Things" could fit in as a big, sweeping, epic finale as well. And so far, DISCO has sought to finish each season in a big way, so their series finale I imagine will go out the same way.
