Agents of SHIELD. Season 1 Discussion Thread

Been a pretty good episode so far.

And it's the return of the offspring of Nathan Fillion and Rob Lowe.

Wherever Quinn goes, supervillains spring up.

And I was half right about Quinn.

I don't remember if I posted it here, but, as my thoughts have shifted towards MODOK as the Clairvoyant, I stopped thinking Quinn was the Clairvoyant (obviously), but instead connected to him. Fitz's "I'd be rich if I were clairvoyant/would bet on the lottery" line is basically the line I've been thinking of. Essentially, the Clairvoyant helped make him rich.

That being said, I'll point out that my original theory that he is the Clairvoyant hasn't been disproved and has technically been strengthened by the revelation that he's connected.

Good episode. Decently similar to The Asset, but also quite different. Coulson's speech about Skye was quite good. I really do think the show works best when it goes for character moments. However, I will say that the ongoing mystery has improved dramatically in the back half.

So Skye is more specially-specialness than we could have hoped for. The question is, if the higher-ups at SHIELD find out, will they take her to the Sandbox and shoot her into the sun?

By the way, would anyone happen to have Samuel Jackson's or Robert Redford's phone number?

So Skye is officially a special snowflake...ugh!

Who would have thought a trip to "Shield Hogwarts" would be so boring?

Think Fury regrets resurrecting Coulson now? Between his moping and wanting to give away secrets, it's further proof Coulson needs to be put out to pasture.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Shield somehow becomes as good as Arrow did in the back half of their first season.

I don't think the Sandbox is where they shoot people into the sun.

I hope the people who complained about Skye having unrealistic abilities don't start complaining if it's revealed that they are supernatural in origin and, thus, seemingly address their criticism.

I don't see what's so special about Skye to begin with and Coulson's sappy speech doesn't change my mind. If Shield doesn't have a hacker better than her, then they are doing a piss-poor job.

It would also be nice if May emoted once and a while.

You mean Quinn? He reminds me more of Tahmoh Penikett.

This was a pretty good one, although it's weird that they didn't actually solve the problem at the end. The superstorm is still there -- who knows how much damage it did? (Maybe Thor showed up after the episode ended and dispersed the storm?)

For a minute there, when Fitz/Simmons were giving their lecture and saying they had pictures of old cases showing the hazards of technology, I was afraid this was going to turn out to be a clip show. I wonder if the writers deliberately did that to mess with us.

I had to look it up...I was thinking of the Slingshot.

Well, her being in the same class as Mjolnir makes it easier to swallow the concept of a hacker chick living in a van who looks like a model.

"Skye, I'm tired of keeping secrets from you. A team of SHIELD agents died protecting you when you were a baby because you're an 0-8-4. Oh, and Ward and May are having sex."

Anyone else notice the name of the brown-haired cadet that Ward questioned while playing pool? "Aly Hannigan." Willow is a SHIELD trainee!

Solid episode

Obliviously another setup for a returning supervillian (the Blizzard?)

I'm beginning to think that Skye could be the MCU version of Mantis since they have a similar back-story. The force out to get her could be the Hand or even HYDRA.

Speaking of HYDRA, when are they coming back and where is Baron Struker in all this? Maybe we find out that Quinn is secretly German.

As for the Clairvoyant, I found this website that listed character by their superpowers and one Supervillian that has clairvoyant powers is the Grimm Reaper, the brother of Wonder man/Simon Williams (Williams mind becomes the basis for the Vision in the Marvel Universe).

Hmmm

Could the two bungling cadets have come up with a dumber plan? Hey pal lets use the ice device on one of us and hope that super brains Fitz and Simmons can figure out how to save us before we die? Sure, who gets frozen? Well I have Mr. Quinns cell number so I guess its you.
So will it turn out Skyes mom is the clairvoyant?
Did Fury resurrect Coulson because there was a chance the clairvoyant couldnt detect him afterwords?
If it was an atmospheric storm how was it shaking a building subbasement like an earthquake?

These and more questions next week, Excelsior!!!

1. Their ice machine didn't kill people in small form, so the "who gets frozen" thing wasn't considered a big deal (technically, they both had the device inflicted on them).
2. Dunno
3. Possibly, but I'm not sure. I'm still having a hard time believing the Clairvoyant has legitimate precognitive abilities. If he did, he wouldn't need to read Coulson's mind to find out what happened, he could read Fury, the Doctor, Agent Hill, etc.'s mind.
4. Was it a subbasement? Ward opened a door that went outside.

I'm not sure where you're getting the idea that they should have a better hacker than her. If the argument is that she's not a very good hacker, I'm not sure that's born out by what's been shown. If the argument is simply that, as good as she is, there should be others, I'm wondering if you took into account what you saw. If she's an object of unknown origin with potential supernatural powers, it hardly seems fair to say that other SHIELD recruits aren't as good as her, does it? No one criticizes SHIELD for not having anyone else as agents who are stronger than Steve Rogers, do they?

The speech wasn't about her hacking skills, it was about her resilience. I didn't take Coulson to say that she was the only resilient person in the world, just that her resilience inspired him. That seemed reasonable to me, but I'd be curious to see why you disagreed.

Interestingly enough, and a different topic, there's a double edge to Coulson's speech. He's praising the SHIELD agents who sacrificed their lives but, at the same time, criticizing the very organization they belong and fight for because of their secrets and manipulation. There seems to be a bit of a Lions led by Donkeys narrative of good people but not so good organization. I'm sure that's leading up to The Winter Soldier.

You are confusing telepathy and clairvoyance. The Clairvoyant can see people's action (accept Coulson) but I don't think he can read people's minds. Which brings up an interesting point. The Clairvoyant must have seen SHIELD's resurrection technology but it seems there is the more to Coulson's return than simple tech.

Update, Just watched "The Magical Place" and Raina implies that Clairvoyant can read minds or at least sees people's dream. Either the Clairvoyant has multiple powers or the writers don't know the difference between reading minds and seeing the future.

Either way, he would have seen Dr. Streiten performing surgery or he would have read someone's mind depending on exactly what powers he has. Coulson being a blackhole to him only matters for things that Coulson did without involving others.

But that speech was once again Coulson telling us she's so great and not showing us.

Where was the Bucky Barnes reference again?

When she first sees the Wall of Valor.

But an origin to "what"?

She said two magic words did you notice?

Bucky Barnes.

I noticed. I also noticed that the badges on that wall came in like six different designs. There was the old SSR badge, the more familiar Shield eagle badge from the comics & movies and the more simplified & stylized version that the show uses as it's logo. There was also two or three others I don't think we've seen before.

I wonder if they represent alternate historic/modern versions of the three different Shield divisions: Ops, SciTech & Comms?

As for Skye, the obvious question to me is "what is her power and why has she not (as far as we know) manifested it since she was an infant?"

Also, I know this is a loooooooong shot but I'm kind of hoping her real name turns out to be Carol Danvers. ;)
