I'm pretty sure the Doctor saw himself in that room. I can't see him being really scared of anything else.

Perhaps not just himself, but all of his selves. The big 11-Doctor cross-over happened just off-screen -- heck, maybe the Valeyard and the DreamLord and the Watcher were there too.

He did have some great one-liners, particularly the one about wanting invading armies to have shade to march in.

He reminded me of these guys:

Mizarians

It's funny, a friend of mine accused this episode of being a rip-off of TNG's Allegiance. While I don't agree with that assessment, it is funny that both episodes feature an alien from a species that is always conquered.

I remembered the Mizaran in a vague sense, but couldn't remember where from. I just knew the idea of a species that always complied rather than resisted.

I thought he was going to turn out to be the bad guy (based on the part where everyone is dying and he's just scavenging for food).

Science fiction concepts have been reused since the beginning of history. I thought it was handled well here. He's a minor character either way.

I know what he saw in his room: Christopher Eccleston NOT coming back for the reunion special.

I wonder who the Doctor saw in his hotelroom. Maybe himself?
Very likely himself and/or the TARDIS. (Thought I heard a sound effect from the console room.) He initially thought that it would be what he most feared, but actually it would have been what would elicit from him the most potent sense of faith, unless the line about leakage is to be believed. Interesting that it was room number 11, too.

I'm not buying what he said about the person "steeped in the blood of a thousand galaxies" not being him, either.

I thought little Amy was what was in the Doctors room? He put a DO NOT DISTURB hanger on the door when he peeked, and then as the hotel fades away, you see the DND hanger fall off the door they just walked out of.

Did I miss something?

Is the show ending?

I only ask because I was reading the descriptions for the next two episodes, and it seems to very much hint at them leading right up to his death in Utah. Does anyone have any information, preferably to the contrary, about this?

I have been so conditioned by this show that when The Doctor opened his room and the cloister bells started ringing, I thought "Oh no its The Master". And I started counting the number of times the bell rang.

One, two, three four, five.

I breathed a sigh of relief.

Matt Smith has been seen filming the Christmas special, interpret that as you will. It is confirmed that episodes are going to continue to air until at least 2013. The show is not ending anytime soon.

Another great episode. The last 2 have been 2 of my favorite Matt Smith episodes.

This one managed to out-scary the Mark Gatiss story in the just the first few minutes.

Doctor Who has a greater chance of outlasting both of us than ending this year.

Tes, my memory of the scene is that the Doctor followed the creature out who collopased next to room 11.

Except that's not how the prison worked. It relied entirely on evoking fear, thereby causing the victims to turn to faith.

During the scene with little Amelia you can see the door behind them and it has no sign and is room #7 not #11. Though it's interesting to note that Doctor #7 also had to shake his companion's faith in him.

Maybe what the Doctor saw was himself alone and letting go of Amy and Rory was somehow confronting the fear of that.

Ooh well spotted, I hope that was intentional!

So he gave them a new car and a new house. Why a new house? Their house from the first episode seemed quite nice.
Maybe he has doubts about the earning potential of a nurse and a strippogram. Maybe he's trying to score brownie points with River in some oblique way. Maybe he feels guilty about the effect he's had on their lives. More than likely, though, it's simple generosity of spirit and the fact that they have a unique friendship. He wants them to do well in their lives. Without the burden of rent or mortgage, Amy would be freer to pursue an academic career, plausible given that Older Amy designed her own version of a sonic screwdriver.

He also gave Donna a lottery ticket. The Doctor is not against giving his companions some big gifts. Plus, there could be something special about the house or its location. The guy has access to future knowledge and future technology. He probably has some ideas about what constitutes a safe environment for Rory and Amy.
