4/5. Very, very good. Great creepy story with inspired characterization. The resolution wasn't bad by any means but felt a bit contrived. A creature that eats faith?! Alright, it helped create a good story but not the greatest of concepts!

This story is really what Night Terrors strived to be but that story fell far short. This is essentially a very similar setup. And, the resolution wasn't too dissimilar. You just do not exhibit the incorrect mental state to solve the problem.

I just don't understand why anyone would want to invade a world inhabited by people who look and act like that. Any natural resources they had would have been stripped away ages ago, and any special technologies or knowledge they would have had would have been in possession of the countless invading races beforehand. So what's the point?

Anyway, I rather liked the episode. I didn't care for the backdrop (I really get annoyed how often ancient Earth mythology is 'real' in space-based shows; I'm still trying to figure out how Medusa wound up in the Star Wars universe), but the actual story itself was pretty interesting. Mostly the part where the Doctor had a look in Room 11 and simply accepted what he saw rather than being afraid of it. It just drives home the fact that he's been terrified his entire life, from looking into the Eye of Harmony, to being hunted as a thief, to being the last of his kind, to being alone (hence all the companions).

One would imagine that their world is strategically well placed enough for countless worlds to want to invade.

If it were that vital, I can't imagine they'd be changing leadership that often. Else, again, there'd be no point in it (since it would be almost guaranteed that you wouldn't keep it long enough for it to matter) and it would be better to simply eliminate the entire the planet as a viable strategic point than to constantly waste resources trying to take and retake it.

I'm pretty sure the Doctor saw himself in that room. I can't see him being really scared of anything else.

Which makes sense to me, given his confrontation with himself as the Dream Lord. That truly seemed to unsettle him.

I have no doubt that's what he said, either. It's his reaction to what he saw that interested me, which again makes me believe he's been completely terrified nearly his entire life for all the reasons mentioned earlier.

The last episode of The Clone Wars featured cybernetic weapons called "Medusae," apparently because of all the snake-like tentacles they had.

Ah well. Sometimes you have to use shortcuts to bring some cultural and emotional resonance to an alien world. You can rationalize this as being a translation of the original Galactic Basic reference.

Come on, we are talking about a universe where Wookies impersonate Tarzan after all :)

I have to say, I'm kinda surprised Amy bought all that stuff about "not being a hero," and he "only wants to be adored". She's seen plenty of evidence that there's a lot more to him than that, and that he often goes out of his WAY to help people.

I would have maybe bought that coming from one of the older Doctors, but not Smith.

I agree I thought it was too abrupt in losing faith in him. Good episode over all though I wonder how it will fit into the overall season despte everythng I didn't think Amy and rory would leave after seeing his death. Despite all thats happened they always seem to feel a responsiblity to him.

Yeah it's one thing not to have "faith" in him anymore as a savior, but you'd think she'd want to stick around at least as a friend to try to prevent his death.

I think that may be where the finale comes into play. It's been a recurring theme of the show for the Doctor to save Amy. Perhaps now they'll flip that one on end and have Amy return to save the Doctor's life somehow.

I meant to say that I loved the Invaded Planet Guy. He was the best.

He did have some great one-liners, particularly the one about wanting invading armies to have shade to march in.

He reminded me of these guys:

Mizarians

It's funny, a friend of mine accused this episode of being a rip-off of TNG's Allegiance. While I don't agree with that assessment, it is funny that both episodes feature an alien from a species that is always conquered.

Well, if you're going to have delusions, might as well go for the really satisfying ones.
