Agents of SHIELD. Season 1 Discussion Thread

The penny wasn't in the bathroom, was it, I thought it was back where Koenig was (he was checking to see if Skye found out he was dead).

Right. The penny had to go back exactly where it was, otherwise Ward would've known that Skye had entered the storage room and found the body. Moving the penny to a different doorway would totally defeat the purpose. Also he would've had no reason to reach out expecting the catch the penny if it weren't the doorway he'd rigged with it in the first place.

The penny doesn't really work does it? I mean, anyone in those circumstances is going to realize what it was, as Skye did. Ward should have followed James Bond and used a hair.

It's unfortunate they killed off Koenig too soon; I rather liked his character. It was fun listening to the team's answers to him during the "orientation. "

Isn't May's middle name Qiaolian? I wonder how long Skye is going to keep Ward from finding out she already knows his secret.

Not forever. But she's got to keep him in the dark just long enough. However long a time that actually is.

Dead doesn't mean dead.

1. Tahiti.

2. LMDs/Recorded-displayed conciousness.

3. Twins/Clones/Skrulls.

4. Tmetravel/Mirror Universes.

5. Flashbacks/Montages/Prequelling.

Another good episode. I'm enjoying the MCU tie-ins but this arch is their best. I kinda expected for Ward to keep his cover for a couple of episodes. Now that Skye knows, it won't be long before she reveals him. I also thought Koenig would be around longer. I enjoyed his line of questioning (and Simmons' TARDIS answer had me cracking up). Also, how the hell is Coulson supposed to find May? I also hope he doesn't think she killed Koenig.

Well, that and Ward kinda torpedoed his last chance right there. The only way Ward can come back at this point, it seems, is if Skye dies without telling everyone what she found out.

ETA: He might die, I suppose, but that would be really sad. There's still a chance for Mike to join the team, of course.
The team is going to find Koenig's body (especially when he starts to stink) and the footage from the Fridge too.

She doesn't expect him to, I think. She's decided he doesn't want her there and she can't be of any more use to the team as long as he doesn't trust her, so she's gone off to find another way to be useful. Which makes sense. She was with SHIELD for a long time, and no doubt has other friends and colleagues she's concerned about.

Wasn't her mother, retired from another agency going to try to link her up with Hill? Assuming Hill is still in the game and not yet in Stark's office I am guessing that she will send May back to Coulson, more than Coulson will find May

Wow! That episode was tense. I loved the Doctor reference, and woot May's mom! Even her mother is a bad ass.

How much does it suck to be Skye? Your mentor/kinda boyfriend is on the other side. He may care for you but he is also using you.

I loved PO's goofy little agent character. I am sorry that Ward killed him.

I am now worrying that the show will end in a season cliffhanger and I won't get any resolution.

Actually, she said Qiu Lian so her full Chinese name is most likely 丘莲. Qiu being her family name and Lian, which means Lily, is her name.

The AoS Wiki and MCU Wiki both say it was Qiaolian, which means "ever skillful," appropriately enough. I'd assume her birth name is Mei Qiaolian, and that it's been Westernized to Melinda Qiaolian May.

I found this episode kind of Meh?! Except for some good Coulson moments, the whole Blacklight story line was perfunctory. Koening proved that he was an idiot. If you can't get a good baseline than a lie detector is useless. He should have restricted Ward to the infirmary (where he would have broken out and killed him anyway). The whole Ward/Skye ship was kind cute but it's now creepy as hell. It reminded me of those horrible Lifetime movies where the woman finds out her boyfriend/husband is a rapist and/or serial killer. Hopefully they will end it soon. Finally if Coulson is going to be a rage monkey against Mei, why doesn't he ask himself why he's so loyal to SHIELD? Why isn't he asking the obvious question, Did Furry mess with my mind as well as my memories? Looks like the next few episodes are a lost cause as they move the pieces in place for "Exciting season ending".

Coulson is loyal to SHIELD for reasons that were made pretty clear in The Avengers. He's an idealist who believes in heroes and who joined SHIELD because he thought it would enable him to do good. It would be terrible if they reduced his loyalty to some cheesy mind-control plot rather than having it be about who he is as a person. Mind control is usually a weak writing trope because it's a lazy substitute for exploring real character motivations.

And when are we going to see Skye's powers? For a second, I thought she was psychic when she touched Ward's ear (before pulling it away to see blood).

Unfortunately we have a character whose mind was manipulated and the question has to be asked. Second in the age of HYDRA, you can't assume anyone's motivation. I still think Coulson could be a HYDRA agent and maybe Furry manipulated him to be the ideal agent (maybe that's why Fury was so unsure of Coulson in the first place).

^Fury was only unsure after the surgery. Before, he sent him to recruit Stark, find Thor's hammer, and have access to experimental laser cannons (Avengers).
