As I understand it, the common practice in those days was for Stan and his artist to brainstorm the general plot of the story, then the artist fleshed out the panel-by-panel beats of the story visually, then Stan did the dialogue. This really shows when Stan was working with a weaker artist, because it's reflected in the relative quality of the stories. Or even when, say, Kirby did the odd Spider-Man story...even though Stan was writing the dialogue, Spidey would act completely out of character. So I assume that a visual detail like the air bag was something that Jack came up with.I wouldn't be surprised if Kirby came up with that. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if Kirby came up with that whole sequence and all Lee did was the dialog.^^^So...did Jack Kirby invent the air bag...?
I was thinking the same thing, except I assume Stan Lee plotted the scene. And we all know that Stan's an expert in hot air...![]()
