The "I was on leave" explanation/excuse for his being present works, to some extent, for a resort planet. It actually makes even less sense if he was taking his leave on the Enterprise and was just already on board while all of this happened.

Archer is pretty clearly extremely racist towards Vulcans in the first 1-2 seasons of Enterprise.
I know they intentionally made him flawed to put him on an arc towards greater understanding, but still, he's presented as an anti-Vulcan bigot, and says disparaging things about Vulcans all the time including to T'Pol's face!
Let's be completely honest here, McCoy said a lot of awfully racist things to Spock in the original series as well.

The original series did the same thing, it just comes off as campy now due to changing humor.
Puppets in Star Trek, it's the death of the franchise. /s
Although this episode dampened my enthusiasm for the season a little, I'm still looking forward to the puppets. I've really enjoyed a number of the "big swing" episodes, and at least liked a number of the others, so it'll be interesting to see what they came up with.
There's a huge difference between professional puppetry as an alternative to CGI (Farscape!) and using muppet style puppets as part of a comedy skit.

I mean if a 40 year old show is your tutor okay but I don't think TNG ever did outright humour did it? As it knew itself. It had humourous moments though.
DS9 had more outright humour. More wins than losses but certainly not a faultless performance.
TNG definitely did with Outrageous Okona.
The humor will always be a challenge because, as others noted, it's closer to TOS style and has to be Star Trek to many people which lacks a sense of humor.

SNW is considerably better at comedy on its worst day than TNG ever was. And I say that as a TNG fan. By the same token, I wouldn't put all of SNW's efforts at the apex of Trek comedy form.
Berman-era Trek did eventually get the hang of comedy. DS9 in particular proved to be a lot better at it, and Voyager and Enterprise (say what you will about them more generally) had some fine comedic outings of their own. TOS likewise was often funnier than its successor.
I'm not sure where I'd rank SNW's wackier outings among those examples. In episodes like The Trouble With Tribbles or Take Me Out to the Holosuite or A Piece of the Action or Bride of Chaotica, the comedy flowed from very simple, straightforward set-ups that made sense on their own terms. That's an admitted advantage by comparison with SNW outings like Four-and-a-Half Vulcans or even like this one, where the setups become less and less straightforward (or even explicable) as the story progresses. And, indeed, the better bracket of Wacky SNW episodes also spring from simple, compact concepts.
Still, the comedic gifts and sheer charisma of the SNW cast -- along with a more contemporary style of humor -- often do a lot of carrying. That's a big part of what really shines in this episode, making its "The Hangover-in-space" premise a lot more palatable than it would otherwise be. (Of course, you have to like The Hangover to get into The Hangover-in-space, but I have no issue with that. Many an episode of Trek has derived its quality by borrowing from other shows and movies.)
TNG attempted quite a few comedic episodes. Rascals, Up the Long Ladder, Data's Day, The Naked Now, The Royale, The Devil's Due, many of Q's appearances (like Qpid), and basically whenever Lwaxana Troi showed up. Many of those were a bit stiff and ill-judged and fell flat (especially the ones centered on Lwaxana, who was an intolerable narcissist and not the charming, effervescent Auntie Mame type they were aiming for).

If you already know and like the characters, seeing how they handle random situations is a lot more enjoyable.
^^Okay, while watching the clip, I decided to pause on the list of other Klingon power ballads, and what do you know, their English titles are also included. Let It Go is there! Oh, damn, I really want to hear the Klingon version of that, though I understand the show would never get clearance from Disney to do so.
I guess he was pretty comical character... but I still don't think of TNG as a show that particularly did comedy. Even that episode did it as a plot device for Data discovering some humanity.
