I would hope this would convince Paramount to give S5 a full ten episode run.

Given that season 5 is filming later this year, the budget and schedules are already locked in for the six episodes they got. Trying to add more would be a logistical nightmare.

Money is still tight as Skydance makes their adjustments. Unless they see a huge swing up to the service it's probably not getting much more. Maybe a streaming film.

Skydance has said theere won't be any more Streaming films. Any Star Trek related films they make will be for Theatrical release.

In an interview Henry Alonso Myers intimated that to get the 5th season of SNW many people had to do things to make it happen (and onne day he'll be able o say what) - so I have a feeling the entire cast agreed to take less in certain types of compenstaion and Paramount took all teh concessions - said "We can give you this amount of a Budget for a SNW %th Season and they canme back with:

"Okay, we can make 6 episodes given that Budget.."

So that's what was agreed to and announced.

So unless the new Skydance/Paramount see something really amazing with respect to viewership; AND they inforo the Poducers immediately the six episodes are already all in pre production and they probably are linked together in a more serial way to wrap up the story they want to tell with SNW and maybe do a little setup for Kirk Year One - which yeah, I donb't thik has a chance in hell of being greenlit; but yeah, they're going to do some sort of handoff scene with Kirk I'll bet.

But yeah, we'll see it in 2027.

Nielsen ratings for July 21 - July 27 are now out.


Strange New Worlds dropped to 9th on the list. Thats the bad news.

The good news is it hit a high for Trek in Total minutes watched eclipsing last weeks 471 million minutes viewed with 472 million minutes viewed....

Now in fairness there are a few heavy hitters that will be hitting the weekly charts next week and later, so it's quite possible that SNW will not track in the top ten. As I expect the threshold to hit the top might eclipse the ratings SNW has got for the last two weeks. But that's just a guess (slash fear), or that any declines that occur in later weeks is enough to keep it out of the top ten.

Two big things.

1. It's quite possible that ratings / financing aren't the primary factor with the cancellation.

Skydance seem really focused on getting Trek back in a theatrical window. If they wish to tell Kirk era stories (or Kirk related stories), they might not wish to dilute that appeal by having Kirk era tv productions on Paramount+.

There are three real solid choices for theatrical releases.

A. Completely original tales with characters not related to other Trek works.
B. TOS related characters, either be it a reboot or a continuation of say the JJverse.
C. TNG related characters, very likely a reboot.

If B is what they are initially thinking of they very likely would not want a competing similar style program with similar era and characters to be on a weekly streaming service. And certainly wouldn't want to be throwing tens of millions of dollars, when they would rather spend that money (and much more) on a theatrical release.

And just to be clear, if they do a TOS style tale its very, very unlikely it would include the cast of SNW.

2. If it is a ratings issue, not related to long term development plans. Understand that Paramount, would have made the cancellation based off of how Trek has performed on the service. Which means they would be judging the typical year to year chance of things like Season 1 to 2 of SNW, seasons of Picard, and how Discover's performance changed over time. Those would all be data points they we don't have a single shred of information on. As Nielsen only released data for 6 weeks of Picard's finale season, only the 6th season of Discovery and only season 2 of SNW.

This season for SNW is the only time that Nielsen has tracked season to season changes. Now of course Paramount does have their own in house data for everything that has ever aired on Paramount +. So they would have a good idea of what has been the typical pattern for shows with a multiple season in Trek.

Thanks to Covid giving a longer then typical wait between seasons it would be very easy to expect SNW to suffer a ratings decline due to that delay.

Of course what has happened so far at least is not a decline but a significant improvement. So far roughly a larger then 35% increase to date over the average (or the weeks that we have data for) of what SNW did in season 3.

Now if costs/ finances and ratings are the primary factor. Its quite possible that if Trek maintains this level of improvement (which is not a sure thing by any stretch), It might give them the idea to go with extending some of the cast with Kirk in a year one situation that's is being floated around. Or even them just not destroying the sets, to give them time to see if its a viable idea.
