Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

A lot of trek fans I follow on Twitter are against what he said, and some of my trek friends

That’s all I’m going to say, as it’s probably TNZ territory

During the era of the studio system, everything actors said and did publically was vetted and approved by their bosses. On one hand, it prevented the expression of unpopular opinions that might harm their marketability. It mainly served to suppress information about their personal lives that might alarm the narrow-minded and galvanize them to boycott studio product. Sexuality was a major aspect of that, such as in the case of Cary Grant.

The people on social media who are desperate to believe that Star Trek, an action-adventure entertainment franchise produced for over half a century with the primary intent of enriching the various IP owners, in its "essence" exists to cosign their idiosyncratic political and social opinions are ignoramuses.

It’s honestly a little fucked up that he gets hounded for saying something like this. Supporting an artist from Israel and not being so quick to label something a genocide shouldn’t give anyone the right to insinuate you’re somehow pro killing Palestinians, pro genocide or against a ceasing of the killing. But here we are, I guess. It would probably have been a little wiser for him to just stay silent on the topic, because I’m sure he doesn’t exactly appreciate the kind of attention this is getting him.

I agree. He's generally not so ego-involved that he shouldn't be able to walk away from this for a little while, which would be best for everyone involved.

These people are children throwing tantrums. Believing that one can usefully engage them is an error. It's feeding the monster.

I'm bracing for some spear-carrying background performer associated with Trek to wade in here to egg the mob on.

Anson Mount should be able to make it through this. He REALLY didn't say anything wrong, and he's not the type to be a general dick about it. Most of the time when people really get in trouble, it's because they double down and dig their heels in.

Mount will probably say something "Sorry if I offended anyone." and move on.

Personally I don't think he needs to apologize for a single fucking thing, but these are the times in which we live now, I guess. Mob Rules. More's the pity...

I don't either, but I also understand how the world works. I've apologized for plenty of things that either weren't my fault at all or I wasn't actually sorry about just to smooth over a situation and move on.

He doesn't even need to say he was wrong. A simple "sorry if you were offended" should suffice. Not an "I was wrong for what I said", just "sorry if it offended you".

Don't pull like a Gina Carano and just double down on it.

The "double down" foolishness has caught on amongst some of the more hysterical of the Trekkie Twitterati.

Double down on what? Speaking reasonably?
