First off: Arrrrgh!
And every time they bring the Gorn back and make them a bigger and bigger threat that's getting dumber and dumber.
It's OK. The writers have told us that story beats canon. What that means is "Yes, we know that the Gorn on our show make no sense in the context of Arena."
Just remember: It's not an alternate timeline. It's just a different TV show.
The issues with the Gorn vanish if you can accept multiple species that include a variation that Kirk wasn't familiar with. Easy peasy.
OK. Let's go over this again. The "canon" issue is not that Kirk did not recognize this species of Gorn. Or even that the Gorn look different and are supposed to be the same species. The issue is that the very name Gorn meant nothing to Kirk. When we now know that as a Starfleet captain that should be setting off a lot of alarms for him. He's remarkably chill in an episode where otherwise Kirk has very damaged calm. The guy in the "Arena" looks like he stole his costume from Spirit Halloween on 11:59 on Oct. 31st.
I'm simply never going to take the "HOW DARE THEY VIOLATE THAT CANON" seriously when you would prefer Spirit Halloween Gorn to a serious alien threat.
